Newb mistake

hi guys, I picked up my myford 10 last weekend and bought some turning tools. The mistake was I didn't check to see what thickness of tool I wanted. I just blindly bought a 10mm rdg set with inserts and when I looked into it today I think the myford takes 8mm ? (I stand to be corrected)
Is it possible to have the tools milled down to 8mm ? Or is it too fiddly a job to fanny about with ?

See if you can swap them over for some 3/8" ones.

some tools u can mill down as a decent one will be quite hard material specially a tip tool one

I milled mine down from 12-10mm. It was nails. I had to buy some spendy carbide milling cutters to do it.
I have a quick change post that takes 10mm tools.

I have often milled down lathe tools, the better makes like Sandvik, Seco, Kennametal are fairly hard but the cheaper ones from the likes of RDG will likely be fairly soft.
Even the ones from Sandvik etc are relatively easy if you have carbide tooling and a reasonably sturdy mill.

If you have a 4 jaw chuck you could face a couple of mm off.

Oh also meant to say that in the days before I had a mill I chucked lathe tools in the 4 jaw and turned them down. Might not be such a good idea on a small lathe like a myford though.

I found it really hard
The material these particular tools were made from killed 2 of my hss cutters before I went carbide.
My little lathe was only happy taking a fraction at a time with lots of cutting oil. Got em to excellent tollerance though.

if your hard pressed grind em down with an angle grinder and keep measuring them. good practice for accuracy by hand

I'd offer but it took an eternity to do my 4. You might not get em till 2017.

As above grind the tops so you don't affect the setup, or get John to fix 'em. Surely if Richard's ML10 takes 10mm tools yours should?

The 12mm bars fitted in my post but the problem I had was centre height. The tip was sitting too high which is why I machined mine off the bottom.
So be aware of that bb. If you take it off the top the centre height won't change unless they are hss bars and your milling end to end??

The original post should take 10mm I would of thought.
In fact I have an original tool post I'll have a look tomorrow. What post do you have @Badger1bear

Yes it will take a 10mm tool BUT the tool tip sits too high to the work piece, it is not in line with the centre of the work piece so it can't cut

2 MM off the bottom then.
Just like mine.
Have you tried the original post clamp
