New windows

Some of our windows are pretty tired, so I'm looking at replacing, probably 2/3 at a time.
Likely get supply only, and I'll fit, or get me mate to do them at my leisure, and minus the salesman bull.... just get a BCO cert when I've done them all

Couple of questions...

External windowsill width, 80mm past the frame, so I gather I need to add the frame thickness/profile onto that, so a 70mm profile means it's a 150 sill...?

The black strip thing above the frame, what's that bit called? It's on them all, whether the top meets the stonework or fits under the sofit board in some places.

Any recommendations for suppliers?

that black thing maybe a cavity window drip sill above the window

with your windows being a bit into the walls abit

that window dosnt look all that bad unless your suffering from sunlight discolouring

Cheers gaz, that makes perfect sense thinking about it now.

Fair few units are starting to blow, frames are starting to suffer sun damage too.
They've had their day I think, reckon they're at least 25 years old.

the government are releasing a 'green homes scheme' in September which will allow home owners to apply for some kind of discount (60% is being touted around) on things like double glazing. ive started to change mine 1 by 1 but am waiting till this scheme launches to see if I can jump on it.

is the black trim above the window plastic or metal? if its metal then its the lintel, if its plastic then it is probably just a bit of moulding stuck on to hide gaps/bodges or to deflect rainwater.

REHAU seem to be regarded as the best, my folks have Profile 22 in their house and it seems nice, ive been fitting Eurocell in mine as they have a depot round the corner and deliver.

stick them in with 7.5x150mm concrete screws with a 6mm pilot hole.

your old windows look the same as my old windows which have 1989 written on them!!.

Its plastic, lintels are galv catnic cg type or similar style.

The green scheme, wonder what the criteria will be... 60% off would be nice! Just do the lot on one go if that's was the case. I'll have to try and find some info.
I was hoping to do the worst ones around september, ready for the winter.

You’ll probably find you have to be on welfare, single parent family, and in a minority of some sort to qualify.

I just spent £800 having five glazing units changed on my place, every glass panel in the front of the house had blown. I should have waited until September.

I was surprised how ‘floppy’ the big window was, 5’ x 6’ and it would bounce in and out with a gentle shove. The new panel is ten times more solid, possibly thicker stronger glass. I think it was all 30 years old, installed when the house was built.

They are still milking that old chestnut.

Really annoys me people already getting benefits get more and more - those people working and paying their way get no help at all no matter what their situation is

HI, It's not so much that but these companies are after the grant money which ultimately comes out of our taxes. They are doing me a favour... yeah right.

(when you use a window installer who is registered with the scheme)

In the past, these schemes have usually resulted in the registered installer increasing the price by the value of the grant in order to cover the additional manhours required to administer the grant.

Based on previous schemes my advice would be that the most productive use of time and effort would be:

1. Learn how to administer the grant.
2. Set up an SME to advise installers how to register for the grant, whilst taking advantage of all SME startup and support grants available to you.
3. Use the earnings to pay to have the windows installed long after the grant has ended by one of the few installers who didn't register and was in business before the scheme and remained so afterwards.
