How interchangeable are different torches? I've got a SIP which works well in that hot stuff comes out of the end melting anything metallic in its wake. But I'm not happy with the quality of the cut. While doing a night school welding course I used a plasma cutter (can't remember what make) which left a really clean cut. I put this down to the torch. I notice that there does not seem to be a standard connection for torches (a la eurotorch) so was wondering if I would have any difficulties if I was to purchase a higher quality torch to fit to my machine?

Some of the cut quality will depend on the torch, some the consumables but also some will depend on the power source. If it was a Hypertherm you used at college then it will of been a Hypertherm torch and they are generally recognised as the best available and give the best results not able to be matched with other brands

Does the SIP you have have a Pilot arc, is it a direct connection inside the machine, and if so, what thread is on the power cable, is the triggering done via a cut-out circuit in the torch head? there's loads of things to consider, plus I very much doubt that the ONE TORCH would be very happy with the output from the SIP
