I've been playing with my new sewing machine, whilst also investigating an interior fit out for my new car, and I've come across something called "MOLLE", which is a military thing for attaching equipment together.
The basic idea is a 1.5x1in / 40x 25mm grid on each item that you want to attach together, then you weave a piece of 1in strap between the two grids to hold them together.
But with a bit of thought, it can be used in a lot of other ways.
Sew, (
) I made a table cloth for my small craft table with ribbons sewn around edge:

Then I made this:

Obviously, could be adapted to any size/shape of tool, and weldmesh could be used as the "grid"
I'm thinking a pair of boards with velcro between - one board attaches to the grid, the second board could hold a small tool kit.
The velcro lets me move the tool kit easily from work space to work space, and the "grid" lets me change the place where it actually hangs.
Reasonably modern army surplus pouches can be attached the same way, and a lot of recent camping gear has the same "system" so tools can be hung on work bags etc.
