Brought a 1993 Discovery earlier this year and now that I have it mechancially viable I need to address the rust

I will be fixing the front inner wheel arches back on the inner upstands with 0.6mm sheet

in the rear arches I have holes at the top to patch up and the body mount is showing on the near side so I will patch that up too.

I have some nice new offcuts 3-6mm which I will use for this.

after that I will remove the plastic sill covers to see how badly holed the sills are, so I can patch and paint up.

I do have a hire shop (artisan) next door which will hireme a mig welder and the protective gear for 27 Pounds per weekend.

at most I would be welding for 3 weekends, so perhaps this is the best option?

If someone has a suitable welder for sale IRO 100 I would be interested of

0.6mm is very thin. If you are new to welding you will be making holes in metal for quite a bit before you start joining it together in any presentable form. Hire the welder from next door depending on the type of machine and get gas supplied with it and a bit of tuition, £100 is not going to get you a sparkling machine so you may be better with your hire option, clean all your work up and make your plates ready then hire the welder.

As Pedrobedro says, that's very thin. Can you not use at least 1.2 mm for this application? This will give you a better chance when welding in. What is the thickness you will be welding to?
Also note that 0.6 mm isn't going to last long unless it is very well protected.

Remember it will be necessary to practice a lot on scrap metal of the same thickness that you will be welding, before you start on your vehicle, if you want to make a nice job of it.

I think I'd have the sill covers off as soon as possible to see what joys you are in for, before estimating total time. Sometimes patching isn't enough...

Read up all you can, and watch a few of the welding videos on here, before starting. This will give you inspiration, and also some idea of what you are in for. Learning beforehand, even only in theory, gives you a better appreciation of what is happening when you actually start welding. Best of luck with it!

I've just about finished on my Discovery, just one rear wheelarch to do (unless something else appears, oh yes LPG tank straps corroded). I used 1.1mm zintec sheet throughout which wasn't a bad match to most sections. Thinnest material I found was the boot floor at about 0.8mm. I was lucky and didn't have to do more than patch the outer sills, although one patch on passenger side was full length between A and B posts.

I think three weekends may be a bit ambitious unless you get everything stripped down cleaned and prepped and all replacment panels fabricated. There's always just a bit more rust than you expect and a bit more cutting to do. Also welding up with the thin metal technique with a series of short stitches and plenty of cooling time takes a lot longer than buzzing in long runs of weld.

Rear inner wheelarch on passenger side looked fine on mine until I removed the trim panel behind dickie seat then it was a bit of a horror story. Ended up removing the rear quarter, outer wing, partly because it was dented and needed some panel beating but also helped with access to welding up the rear arch.

If you've got an old Discovery investing in a welder should be almost obligatory unless you can get someone else to do the work for you very cheaply.

3 weedends welding maybe much more than you think it allways is so if you think 3 weekends make it more like 6 weekends
you need metal of 1.2mm for disco sills innerwings boot floor wheelarchs etc then you bias you torch towards the new metal you
need to have a good look round it first start tapping with a toffee hammer big screw driver
you will find more rot than you think all good fun with a disco

I Started off with innerwing one side small patch one small patch on both sills and patck on rear arch !!,,,
When finnished ended up replacing both sills most off both innerwings rear floor sides round wheel arches and rear body cross member so should be good till next years mot then start again on other parts,,.,
But this is the joy of owning and running a landrover,,,,
