New to TIG need some advise

Hi, I have been mig welding for many years now. mainly on cars. But now i have another project on the go and i would like to do stainless welding for my exhaust pipes using TIG. I will need to practice but i have a fair bit of patience and like finish of TIG welded joints.

I have managed to borrow a TIG welder off a friend but it has no Torch.

The welder is a Miller maxstar 200 Dx as far as i can work out. Can i get an air cooled torch from ebay or does it need to be a special one for this type of welder?

Is this suitable for a beginner as it seems to have alot of function from reading the manual?

Hi there tshirt2k. you will need a tig torch mono power cable and switch that
can be on the torch handle or foot switch on the floor. first what thickness
material would you be welding and i will suggest further thanks ocean

At first it will be for 1.5mm exhaust pipe but prob not much bigger than 4mm

Hi again . i would buy a wp9 tig torch ebay no (220354586459) you then need
( 220354811400) and also item no (220354829883 the last item ive listed
would have to be the correct dise fitting 3/8 i think but maybe 35/50 the
gas connection is 5/8 bsp i think you can download the manual of millers site
you then need the plug that fits on the two wires from the switch you would
get that from parweld actually you could get the whole thing from parweld

Thanks for the info. Have had a look. I have downloaded a manual and it seems that the torch looks a little different. would this item be Ok 220354646460 as it eliminates the adapter? Or is the other one easier to use? What is the switch lead and boot kit for?

Not sure what you mean by the plug for the switch? Is that needed? Does it connect to th large round plud on the welder for remote recepticle.

Hi there is a 14 pin connector plug at the bottom and front of youre machine
its between +and - that is where youre switch would connect the plug on the
machine is a female you would have to buy a male 14 pin plug parweld ercp4
its called a amphenol plug you only have to use two of the 14 pins but you
would have to find out witch i will post some pics when my camera charges

parweld will make everything for youre machine you can have a switch on the torch for swiching on the hf you can also have a wheel to control current
from the handle as well cheers phil

Easiest solution is probably to PM Weldequip and ask him what a Binzel torch (AbiTIG?) to suit will set you back. Easiest, but not necessarily cheapest.

How do i know what size dinse plug i have. Does 50/70 mean anything?

here is the picture for the plug. Do You know what connections i need to connect to?

Also, where can i get parweld suff from?

50/70 sounds about right. There's a smaller one (35/50?) and a larger (70/95?). Parweld don't sell direct so you'll need to find a dealer.

Is that large or medium ?? ie 50/70.

50/70 would be the 'medium' size but if you just look for a 50/70 you'll be fine. I think it refers to the range of CSAs of cable they are designed for.

No idea where you'll find a Parweld dealer I'm afraid. DIYwelding sells their MIG torches so might be able to get hold of TIG stuff too. Weldequip can get hold of Binzel stuff but I don't know about Parweld. I seem to remember him saying something about having had some issues with Parweld stuff recently....

hiya you need a w-p 17 torch with the correct fittings and plug to switch the gas and curent on and off this machine does have a lot of whistles and bells on it and probably not ideal for a novice

I think the more sophisticated the machine, the easier it is to learn on. As long as you get it set up correctly in the first place.
