new tig welder help

hello all iv been reading the forum and there seems to be a lot of helpfull people on the site and im hoping i can get a bit of your time and experince please, im looking to get myself a tig welder for some small bodywork and sill, frame work, going to be mostly thin sheet steel no more than 4 mm thick must be able to weld stainless aswell and be able to use a normal power supply 240v new to tig welding but have used a arc welder for a while. budget is under £200 dont really care on makes as long as it will do the job i need it to, thank you all for taking the time here

Did you really mean TIG, MIG is probably better suited to most bodywork duties, and £200 is going to be a bit low to get a TIG set up.

Why not just buy a tig torch and plug it into your stick set? what stick set do you have?

thank you for your quick replys, yes i did mean a tig welder, i will get the full details of my arc welder today but im sure the amps are to high even on the lowest settings for thin sheet work as car bodys or other wise i would consider just buying a tig torch for that setup, i dont really need anything massive its not going to be used heavy in one go, if i do need to up my budget how much do you think i would need to be paying, as i would like to be grabbing a good bargain to keep the price down

Welcome to the forum.

You are probably better off with a MIG for car bodywork and something around 150A if you want to weld up to 4mm. TIG is fine for nice and flat on the bench but a MIG is much easier to use under a car!

Cheapest set you will find that will not fail in the first 5mins is an R-tech.

I'm afraid the budget of under £200 for a TIG is going to seriously limit your chances unless you are dead lucky and find that once in a lifetime bargain thats been sitting in someone's shed and they don't know the value of what they have.

Under £200 and I am referring to £199, is just entering the buying power for a half decent hobby MIG and MIG's are a lot cheaper than TIG, also cheaper to run and easier to use on car repairs.

If your after a tig and budget is just £200 you MIGHT something but remember you'll need a regulator which can be upto £60, plus consumables etc, same goes with a mig set, if you insist on a tig then just buy the torch and regulator and plug it into you stick set

^ I'm guessing by 'arc welder' that it's an AC buzzbox in which case a tig torch is no good.

I'm with the others, forget tig, up your budget and get a decent mig.
