New Project ……..again…..Porsche Boxster 3.2s

Yep, it’s that time of year again, another new project has found its way into the stable! Any of my IG followers might have seen I stumbled across a cheap, year 2000 Porsche Boxster 3.2s.
Was offered it, sans MOT back in June needing a front screen, hood repair for plastic rear window, sill welding, brakes and a few other minor bits. Had been off the road in a mates garage for a couple of years. I still had the Cooper S at the time and couldn’t justify another money pit so turned it down…….roll the clock forward 6 months, and matey rings me asking if I was still interested as the guy who’d bought it had gotten it through the mot but had just bought another, 3 years newer off co-part and needed to offload this one.
Turns out he’d had an early one with electrical probs and broke it but used those parts to fix this one. It still had a few foibles (I’m finding more as time ticks on….) but it was mot’d, 95k, had a new glass hood, fresh front screen, new brakes all round, welding was done (rough) and I could have it for an extra £700! The hood and screen would have cost me that!

Hood wouldn’t drop when I went to see it, then when I went to collect it we couldn’t get it back up! Central locking was fubar, door glass doesn’t stay dropped when you open the door, blowers don’t……and no history!

Popped off the actuating arms to close the hood, and found out once it was home that I couldn’t lock the pass door. For now I could cope with the roof, but CL was important.

Turns out the drains had blocked up flooding the pass footwell where the module lives. Drains now cleared. Removed the module, opened it up, washed the board with IPA, dried it out, put in a new 15a fuse and it works once again.

Hood was a bit more complicated to sort. Pulled out the roof relay and after measuring for voltages at each point I found the roof latch microswitch wasn’t working. I’d already checked the switch operation and confirmed it healthy!
So, I dropped it down again and found a dry joint at the plug to the switch. Just needs re-flowing with a soldering iron but for now it’s working.
Still waiting for a used fan blower to arrive along with an Audi TT Mk1 door latch to cure the window drop (Porsche even list it as the same part number!)

Car is rapid once revved hard. It’s the Tiptronic 3.2s and above 5k (redline is 7200!) it revs quicker to the redline than from 2-5k and the sound that emanates from the sports exhaust is pure car porn!
No evidence of the IMS being replaced but interestingly, when I had the seat out I found a laminated fishing license, a bit of digging found the 2016 original owners details who confirmed he still has the bookpack wallet complete with fully stamped history……what are the chances!

Hair dressers dont normally like Landrovers. But that looks to have an amount of grin factor, though the grin might change to a grimace at the Porsche spares counter!

how rusty is it ? dont hear of many wanting sills welding

If it has the electronic handbrake, there is a rubber boot on the switch. This can harden. This leads to issues.

There’s not much corrosion anywhere really. It was an odd place too. I have the photos from June when I first saw it.

If it has the electronic handbrake, there is a rubber boot on the switch. This can harden. This leads to issues.

I checked the feedback from the handbrake switch when testing at the relay. Thankfully the issue was straightforward with a dry joint at the latch.

My current Pan Euro came as salvage from Motomine; no panniers but topbox fitted. In one of the gloveboxes was an insurance cert that had a name but no address. Via 192 and an online directory I tracked the guy down; he was a retired copper and still had the panniers in his garage - which he wanted £100 for, but it was worth it given the colour match and correct locks. He also told me he'd sent a box file of the bike's history to the insurance company; a quick phone call found it at the breakers who duly sent me it

Couple of my mates have 996's; they often remark on how many Audi/VAG parts they use.
The flat-6 uses oil scavenge pumps on the cylinder heads; a piece broke off one and went into the timing chain and around the cam gears... it got messy
