New Power generator advice

As you already know I would like to buy a "new" (actually used) power generator
GENSET MG 10000 I-B
9kW 230V 50Hz around 40A output
Dimensions are roughly
80cm long
40cm wide
70cm tall
Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 15Hp V-Twin gasoline engine
The owner said that it has been serviced recently
New spark plugs
New air filter
New oil filter
New fuel filter
New fuel pump
New socket

I don't like B&S engines I've got two last year that blown up (connection rods failure) that is a big concern for me

I love genset products , reputable Italian generator set manufacturer .
I have an engine driven welder from them.
I thought that I will probably use it once a week for few hours for plasma cutting things when needed, welding etc
Maybe in the future also for machining .
I have only 3kW single phase at home and I figured out that it isn't worth to get three phase at home (waste of money)
But I'm not sure if I should buy this power generator because the owner wants a reasonable price but way over my intended budget .
How much you would like to pay a Genny like this one?

It's pretty easy to get parts for those engines as they are fitted into ride on mowers and stuff so you should be able to find spares providing a broken conrod does not damage the casing.
A complete new engine is about £1200.

If you were planning on using it for any length of time then a diesel will save you a load of money on running costs.

If I was buying one to power the workshop I would get a 3 phase as buying used 3ph equipment is a lot cheaper. Be aware that a 3ph generator will probably have a lower output from any single phase plugs fitted.

As for price, a brand new cheap one would be about £600 with warranty so I would be happy enough to pay anything less than that for a decent brand used one in good condition.

Agree with you if it was three phase ....
I found another engine driven welder always genset ,the owner wants 800 euros for that generator ,the engine driven welder is 600 euros .
The engine driven welder is a genset mpm 7/250 (don't know the complete name)
It's at the opposite of the island
7.5kW 380V three phase
5kW 230V single phase
250A welding power
Lombardini diesel engine (Kohler I think, because isn't too old)

Working , great power generator and welding power, just needs to redo the entire wirings because conductors catch on fire back in the time
It will probably need 800 euros worth of work on it
That's if windings didn't get damaged by the fire
It needs paintjob because it's in terrific shape
Got painted in orange (it should be black and silver+black or green engine, or Pullman blue and white an silver +black engine)
Very nasty I will upload photos ,name plate doesn't appear in the pictures .
3 car hour far from me.

I expect it has done internal damage. No reason for the wires to have burnt by themselves.

I have seen a few generators burnt.
When there is a main power cut people connect them with a plug to a socket and send power around the house that way. When the mains power comes back on it frys the generator.
My next door neighbour has done this to a brand new generator the first time he used it.
Bought a new replacement and did the same thing again.

So it's scrap metal, unless he sells it for 100 euros

I almost forgot
A buddy of mine has a big diesel generator ,it doesn't start and he was thinking about scraping away .
I'm pretty confident that it's a fuel issue
Air/bad filters /holes /pump
It could probably be the deal of the century

I would offer to give him the scrap money.for.it and tow it away.
Make sure it cranks over then give it a compression test.
If it's got compression it can't take much to get it running

Lombardini Is Italian +I'm too+ live in Italy =not too much expensive here unless for the ignition coil , fairly easy to found parts and those engine are ignorant proof , easy design very durable and reliable

It could be also the decompression valve
It might be 2 or even 3 cylinders I can't remember right now but I'm sure that is big

That is criminal, not just stupid. Some poor sod working on what is supposed to be a dead line gets your neighbour's juice pushed back up the line and even stepped up by a transformer. Could even be manslaughter.

Yep,
Twice I have seen him do it.
He plugs the generator into a 32a socket in his workshop and turns the main breaker off to stop the power going back into the grid.
But both times he has blown the generators up by turning off the generator after he has seen other houses with lights come on and then put his breaker back up without unplugging the genny.

He needs an ATS module

I would look at the big old generator first, if it's not worn out it would give you loads of potential to run big tools + provide backup power for your house.
The Briggs and Stratton sounds ok, I have only worked on / owned the lawn tractor and lawn mower versions but in my experience they have been good units if they are maintained, but they haven't got hard run generator hours on them...

I've got half lawn tractor (half mine half of a friend of mine) 12Hp Murray , with an 12Hp single cylinder IC Briggs , changed two engines on it because blown up , crankcase split opened after connection rod fail (completely destroyed )
I believe because governor failure
Both engines had few hours on them

That's unlucky! I look after an ancient Murray and my own Husqvarna lt125, apart from cleaning carbs and servicing they have both been good machines.
