New panels

Hi all,I have been watching a video of professionals replacing a sill with new panels and they never took the black paint off, I assume the black paint on new panels is weld through, Have I been wasting my time grinding back to shiny metal.

its best to flat the black primer off and use some decent quality primer on both sides and then after the job is done treat the inside of the sill

Some primers on new panels are to prevent rusting in storage, best to check with the supplier of the panel.

on the new panel its best to drill your holes for the new plug welds then just clean the imidiate area of the hole not the whole lip, it saves time preping the sill for paint later and leaves a better surface

On older panels the black was just a poor quality transit paint and if you start to rub down these old panels you'll notice the dust from the paint is brown with rust. I prefer to remove it if the panel isn't a quality modern one.
I just make sure I use etch primer before any other coatings.

you misunderstood the post, i think he was cleaning the full lip with a grinder when there is no need as it will take more prep later on when it comes to painting

I normally take it all off with thinners, it's poor quality primer to paint over

exactly right. IF it washes off with thinners, wash it off.
