Ironically, I once bought a round bed Drummond which someone had done exactly that to. I converted it to V-belt drive.

Funnily enough I was planning a drive using bike chain and gears but a bit later than a SA hub but still having a belt so there is a mechanical fuse on my lathe updates.

The problem with chain drive is that it's not forgiving. A belt will slip. A chain will cause the weakest link in the drive to fail, sometimes spectacularly.

Damn noisy too, plus it can leave witness marks in your work.

That's a good point which I'd never even considered, the possible effect on the finish. Merely the thought of using chain has stopped me from ever actually trying it.
