New motor for drill

hi, i've just acquired a lovely Meddings bench drill, big heavy ******, bit rusty but very well built. I plugged it in and turned it on and it went great for about 30 secs before lots of smoke came out of the motor and it died! I see a lot of threads on here saying it's easy to get new (single phase) motors for these, does anybody know where from, its quite old so the motor shaft is imperial (5/8).

Is it belt driven? If so you should be able to get a metric pulley to fit a modern motor.

i never thought about that! Where would you get a new pulley from i wander? Also i wander if the footplate mounting holes will line up, again with my old drill being imperial i guess the distance between m ounting holes will be imp. I will remove the motor and have a good look. I really want to get the drill up and running as it's a beast, but i cant be bothered with loads of hassle and expense.

When I changed the motor on my power hacksaw I just fitted a modern motor with it's own pulley. The feet didn't line up so I made two 'adapters' from some 25(ish)mm box section.

I cut two pieces of the scrap box section and placed them lengthways under the feet of the motor, so one on the left, under the left two mouting holes and the same on the right. I marked, drilled and tapped holes for the motors foot. I then bolted them to the motor with M8 bolts.

The underside of the box section I marked, drilled and tapped to match the holes in the base of the saw, then put M8 bolts through the base into the box section, bolting it down. Converted! Total cost £0 (plus motor of course).

Im glad ive seen this. Ive bought a Meddings pillar drill wiith a brand new three phase motor on it, but I want to put a single phase on, so ill have to look at that supplier and see if there is one suitable. Thanks.

one last thing, once it's sorted i'm going to be drilling 1 inch holes in 2mm thick box, i wander what size motor i should be going for, would 500w do it or bigger? Also if anybody knows, is a blacksmith drill bit best for that type of hole or some sort of annular type cutter?

On 2mm thick material your best bet would be something like a holesaw. A blacksmiths drill will tend to snag on the hole as it breaks through, and also leave an oval hole.

I am going to be drilling quite a few of these, (about 8 a week), i am worried that a hole saw might just get blunt really quick and need replacing. I would like to use one of those broach cutter things from a magdrill but the adapters look really pricey

I think that size drill through that thickness will cause problems, if not oval holes it will want to snatch at the work.

Do you have 8 holes a week to drill or 8 lengths with many holes ?

A holesaw could be the cheapest option to start with.

i would avoid anything from ebay and especially of a "no name" make.....get a quality bit.
Also you need to use plenty of coolant when cutting the hole or the bit wont last.
As said above a blacksmiths dril bit will tend to snatch and will require more power from the drill......all drill bits cut oval holes,thats why precision holes are drilled undersize and then reamed to the correct size.

The holesaw in the link looks a bit expensive and there is a large pitch between the teeth which may not be very good for 2mm thickness.


I would start off with something like this for £3 from screwfix and the arbour to mount it on £3.

If you're drilling right through the box section a hole saw will do the job but they are prone to throwing teeth if they catch, especially on a pillar drill, they need to be treated gently and work better with plenty of coolant. You could run a small pilot through first and then use a step drill, much easier on the machine and if looked after will last for years.

I too have just bought a 3 phase drill Meddings Drill (off ebay). The cost of the inverter was WAY too much, so I have decided to go down the 240V route.
The motor I have replaced, with the same power, 0.37 KW, but single phase. From these guys

Different hole mountings, (plate being made right now) and a different shaft size (making a collar right now), to make it all fit.
A new belt came from Meddings themselves.
Whether it’s any good or not, I don’t know. I haven’t got round to fitting it yet. I’ll let you know
