New Member with fj40 project

Hi all
A great site with lots of great infomation
Im from New Zealand but don't hold that against me

My question is where and if I should cut the side panel to weld in a panel or rustkill and filler
I am using a weldwell steadymig145 on gasless .8 fluxcore
very new to welding so still practising and learning
I welded a small panel in rear quarter which didn't come out to bad but took me hours

any advise would be much appreciated

Obviously there's nothing wrong with Wellington as long as you don't mind living on an active fault line

Can you run gas in your MIG? I know BOC are expensive but it will be worth it.

And to be honest, welding in fresh steel is always better. At least you're dealing with straight panels so it shouldn't be too hard. Use the thin metal technique of course.

Yes my mig can run gas actully started with gas wire and no gas not knowing anything at all lol untill I come on here and was reading about wire ect typical kiwi way I wont tell you the outcome of welding with no gas

yes bocs pricing here was the reason I went to fluxcore
think its cheaper to buy your own bottle and get supagas to fill it so I been told will ring them tommorow and get some prices from them

Yes have a look at Supagas,
TWL/Goughs on Seaview Road opposite Placemakers and BOC Seaview are their Wellington agent.
I get my oxy acetylene refilled by them and am looking at buying an Argon bottle from them. I use CO2 at present with my MIG

Interesting Adrian - did not know that Supagas had a Wellington outlet. In their defence, you can get welding gas on a Sunday from BOC's agent Zip Plumbing in Newtown - handy when you're a weekend warrior like me.

So back to the repair - what's your current thoughts about patching it? The large flat area is going to be easy to fabricate a patch but minimising distortion might be a bit of a pain. In your favour is the fact you have the floor on the inside to keep it flat, so one big 3 inch wide strip might be my suggestion.

Yes thats what I was thinking I had already cut a strip of 60mm .8 steel
was thinking maybe get sum 1.2mm panel instead? whats anyones thoughts on that?

got it going to engineers end of the week for rollcage and seat brackets and seatbelt mountings thought my wleding wouldn't be good enough at this stage for structual fabrication

still havn't got any gas sorted
I have 2 co2 botlles but out of test, was going to ring porirua testing for testing as they seem to be in good condition

Usually best use the same thickess as the panels, or close as. I like those FJs, think we have a LWB one on here as well, yellowish also.

Hey guys
havn't done anymore panel steel on the fj but are in the stages of making new seat frames. Is it better/stronger to butt join the steel and cap or mitre the joins?
I am using 50x25x3mm

I'd mitre them personally for neatness. I don't think it will matter much and it's less faffing about. Is this going to be certified for the road? In which case, have a chat to your certifier which is going to be more accurate. I popped out to see Ken McAdam in the Hutt to check to see if he was okay about my seat frames for my mini - not a bad bloke at all. If they're not stressed seats (i.e. if the seat belt is mounted to the car and not the seat itself as they are in modern cars) then he's quite relaxed. All the cert info is on the LVVTA website.
