I would use another primer on the etch.

Use the acid etch primer and then a high build primer and then rub it down to get it smoother.

So once the alloy is primed with etch primer am I ok to go stright onto using cellulose paints or is there another stage before top coat? I'll also give the primer a slight sand with wet 1500grit to key the surfacet hen give it a wipe. Does that sound about right? Going to use the etch primer below:

The etch primer is followed by hi build primer which gets flatted with a block (not with your hand) don't use 1500 its way too fine, use 600-800 and use it dry not wet
