New Lathe

Woo hoo, just won a Grays on lathe on th bay for 175 squid, assuming it is not completely worn out is this a good buy or not, it comes in a cabinet with motor and counter shaft etc, looks like it has power feed, don't know any more about it.Any one else got one of these ?

Nice buy, luckily for you the seller is one of those that knows nothing about making his item look good in the photo's, a clean up would have added another £100 to that.

unless you have a photo of the extra tools they can hide what they have in other tools

had it with my lathe that i bought a couple of weeks later the bigger chuck was put onto ebay there was no pick of the bigger chuck with the photo i had seen so couldnt say anything

but i got alot more in other things when collecting the lathe so in one way not that bothered to a degree

nice purchase though

The cabinet door was sized shut
Once prized open all the bits were there
Even the out side jaws

Collected lathe today, had to do a bit of demolition on the cabinet but to be fair it was a lash up anyway ,the wiring still had round pin plug on .I cannot find any slop in the headstock and carriages, the mechanical feed works OK and the engagement seems positive, it came with bits in the photo, it seems that I have got my money's worth. (I hope)! See the pics ,comments welcome, and yes I do feel a little chuffed.
It will need rewiring but the motor is a runner and the counter shaft is home made but substantial .Both 3 jaw chucks have 2 sets of jaws,the 4 jaw independent is in good nick as is the face plate.Will make improvements to the cabinet etc.

Yeah ,the underside is another coin which has been machined to fit,can't see any dates though, there is a serial no on the bed 128. 20 ,will fit a new lead and try it out tomorrow,make some swarf hopefully,there are a few tools in one of the tins, just gotta find some metal now ! Also need a work light for it and some cutting fluid to brush on ,cheers

dont just run it straight away its unknown how long its stood for unless you know for how long

get it oiled up and work some of that oil into parts first then run it slowly as it could still be dry

Hi, both oilers on headstock were full on collection mtd one onto my jacket ,now refilled, all parts move freely , will oil up gears , would chainsaw oil be OK for the gears,?
Has any one got any metal they want converting into swarf/scrap

That was a nice find, well done.

It is probably on a par with a Myford ML4 and if it had been a Myford the selling price would have been at least double. especially with those chucks!
