New gate required, but concrete post issue.

Ayup guys n gals, so now all the work on the outside of the house is done I need a new gate.. no dramas with that, il be mounting the hinges to the garage wall, however, I need some way of locking it, bit the other side is a concrete fence post, and around it is new flags/pebbled area so don't really want to start digging that up. Does anybody have any clever suggestions as to how I can achieved this.
I was planning g to mount the hinges on the front wall of garage so when the gate opens it leaves the full opening for moving stuff down the side of the garage.

How it works I'm not sure but does entail drilling into the post and the use of expansion/anchor bolts.

I can see that being fraught with problems, hitting rebar', cracking of post and so on although I have successfully drilled posts but more by luck.

I think I would try with either flat bar wrapped and bolted around post and rig a gate latch off the flat bar, a lot easier to fashion, drill, play with.

Or square up some threaded metal stud, X2 ( think square exhaust clamps ) and rig a catch off of thoses.

Screw a piece of timber into the exposed top half of the u of the post then there are any number of ways of installing a lock. Wouldn't even have to drill and screw it tbh,plenty of glues available strong enough to stick it there.

I’ve drilled and screw to concrete posts. My sister had me turn her back garden into a prison camp, to keep her cats in. I used steel strips bolted to coach fence post, which poked up and inward t 45°, with fish nets strung on them.

I worked out there are four re-bars down each post so I could drill into the centreline and miss them.
Rawplugs and lag bolts, and the job was done.

I do not think those would be very strong. Slip that over the post and push sideways on it (as it would see force when used on a gate). The C-shape will just open up.

Expansion anchors are not at all recommended for concrete fence posts. The posts are delicate items, cost-engineered to be as thin and as cheap as will do the job.

If you are going to drill them, better to use many small fasteners rather than a couple of big ones. 6mm red rawlplugs, a Bosch multimaterial drill bit and no or minimal hammer action.

As the fence panel just drops into the grooves in the posts, take it out, shorten it and add a piece of solid timber to make up for what you have cut off. That will give you something solid from which you can build. Any force on it from the gate will be going into the panel, along it and into the next post.

Consider putting female resin anchors into the house wall and using a post secured with bolts. Once a year when you need the full width, remove the bolts, post and gate complete.

As above, knowing where the rebar is in the post will help. Do you have any post offcuts or can you find somewhere that has any broken ones?

If you go into the u shape,there are usually a couple of holes already that could have a resin anchor inserted.

the brickwork is poor to fasten a gate properly as the brick is full of holes and really needs a good fastening on the corner or on the side of the wall

a pivort floor hinge is better with a top hinge

Does anyone know how to best use these? I see many suppliers sell them, along side a block and strap for the top hinge. I thought suppliers would also sell a cup that these fit into but I cant seem to source anything like that. Am I supposed to just drill a 22mm hole in a solid square bar around...

OK, I have not used them so as to strength I don't know, I was just putting my thinking hat on.

I agree expansion bolts in to any concrete post has risks if simply because any drill used would have to be set to hammer, not ideal.

Still @paulmitchell1984 knows the issue is resolvable and shouldn't cause him to much grief.

Call me Barry bodge but… is there any reason why you can’t just pop a little hole in the fence panel, pop a little bit of sheet metal surround on the hole if your feeling posh. Gate bolt shuts in hole. Job done.

Use the time you saved for afternoon love making, watching sport, making a top quality sandwich or any combination of the above…

Screw a timber into the U channel on the alleyway side of the concrete post, it should line up the gate with the corner of the wall.
The rebar will be in each corner of the H , there should be none in the centre. Fit whichever lock to the timber that floats your boat.

I made my own version of those (because welding forum) from 40 x 5 ss flat. They are definitely not bendy.
