New drill needed

I need a new hammer drill, give the poor battery life I’ve had with my old Dewalt I’m minded to go back to corded - any recommendations please?

I bought a cheap wired Aldi drill years ago and it gets used all the time in the shed, faster and stronger than my rechargeable drill and it has a bigger chuck.

Had a couple of original Dewalt ones but they died, bought a few Chinese ones on Amazon but can only get one hole 10mm hole in stone out of them.

My Dewalt is 20 years old and not SDS, though has had very little use over the years, I’ll have to have a look at it in the morning to see what batteries I’ve got.

Ahh, so not lithium batteries?

if it’s for masonry, a SDS DeWalt with a couple of 5ah batteries and you’ll never want to see a cord again.

DeWalt sds brushless is nice. Nearly walked out with one yesterday but a 18v router is more useful short-term

Bought a cordless Parkside SDS mainly because have loads of 20v 2&4ah batteries for that system. Don't have a good range of sds bits so have a keyless sds chuck, makes it a bit cumbersome at the nose end.. It's been pretty good on some hard work. Always keep my 110v tools habdy. Cordless is great but sometimes you need the longevity of corded

You cannot compare 20 year old Ni-Cad or Ni-Mh powered tools to any modern Li-Ion powered stuff. Worlds apart, that said you buy battery adapters that allow the new batteries to be used on the old kit for Dewalt.

The 18v Dewalt brushless SDS is a great bit of kit as will any major brand be.

If only need to do the odd masonary hole then a normal hammer drill will do just fine. The SDS units are a bit cumbersome if you don't need that performance.

I’m aware mine is old technology, but despite being ‘retired’ and telling everyone I only bash metal for fun I’ve got a growing order book - now got a 12m run of railings to make and install hence the need for a new drill!

I have ryobi one+ kit my SDS drill and some fairly cheap bits have drilled 1m deep up to 16mm, 150mm on a 32mm and one I always reach for when drilling any kind of masonry. Bit slow in concrete but rarely have I met something it won't drill. It eats batteries on big jobs but a couple of 4AH will see me through a hard day.
Hardly ever use my pistol drill for masonry, more useful for wood and metal.
For a really big job I would look at 36v cordless.

If you have mains, then a cheap corded SDS all the way. With a chuck adaptor for when you are not using SDS drills.

The SDS system hits MUCH harder than a conventional hammer drill and drills holes in concrete, brick, stone, etc, much faster (I'm guessing between 5 times and 25 times as fast, depending on the material, based on my personal experience).

With a chuck and in rotary-only mode, the torque on an SDS drill is usually significantly greater than a conventional drill of similar cost: good for holes above about 10mm in steel. It's obviously less good for pilot holes in steel and pretty crap if you need to drill hundreds of pop-rivet holes.

The impact value in Joules is what makes the difference in SDS mode. The best drill I ever had for diy-type stuff was an old Black and Decker with an impact energy under 1.5 Joules: enough to drill 10-12 mm holes quickly in concrete and brick, but not so much that it would knock the back out of a brick when drilling it. I replaced it with a 3 Joule drill and was forever knocking the back out of bricks with it when drilling fixing holes in walls. Ended up buying a battery SDS for the lower impact.

Depends what you're using it for; I had use of a friends corded Hilti SDS max late last year and couldn't believe how much more powerful it was.

I've had my Dewalt corded SDS plus for maybe 10 years and its done great, handles our very tough bricks easily. Only thing it didn't handle was breaking up concrete with chisel bits. Quite hold now so there is likely to be a newer version or bargains available on Ebay, etc. Sticker on the box for mine says D25013K.
