Funnily enough the 80-yr old British Polar 2-stroke I just posted in the Rusty Relics section is also crank case independent..
these look interesting, what's the purpose?

Like Doxford, British polar were big players in the engine and shipping world, till our ship building died. Another company who didnt sell their license to be built over seas.
Most big two strokes are like that. I think lubrication in a small engine of that design would end up being extremely complex. On a large engine, the crank and mains are lubricated by foced oil through the crank etc including the cross head. The liner is done through the liner with foced lub. Then you need to throw in cooling to adding more complexity.
