Networking Reference Book Recommendations

I'm after a paper book (not an E book) on network basics.
Something that goes into DNS, Gateways, port forwarding, NAT, PAT, etc.
Are the Networks for Dummies any good or are there better recommendations.

Depends on the author. Some are good, some not so much.

Cisco books from a CCNE course or similar are very good but not any use for a more gentle introduction.

I can have a word with my network colleagues for recommendations if you like?

I had a quick look and nothing jumped out at me. The networking for dummies books get good reviews so they would probably cover the things you are after ? Is this for a course or general interest ?

Work, I'm a telephone engineer who's used to traditional phone systems but nearly all our new installs are VOIP.
I'm feeling my way round at the moment but I really need to improve my knowledge base.

I personally like this series but it is mid level or the deploying voip for dummies may be fine. I work with VoIP a lot but haven’t read a voip book in a while but it’s not really changed that much.

It might be more than fifteen years old, but I'd recommend anything around "MCSE Networking Essentials" - it was the required initial pass, prior to starting down the Microsoft Certified track, and covered all of the essentials from physical cabling up through network layers and all the devices that are used.

There are books that cover it from the "Dummies'..." end all the way up to dry Microsoft tomes, but the best bits are a) it's all still relevant and b) the books are so old you can literally buy them for less than £1.
