Networking 3 computers.

We have 3 computers networked together at the shop. In a bid to make things better I had windows 10 installed on the two that still had 7 on them. The network was fine before but now none of the computers can see eachother on the network. The guy doing the upgrade says there have been a lot of similar problems with the latest windows version, 18 03 I think he said.

Anyone know anything about this???

Check the workgroup as they vary between major versions. MSHOME is current I think but XP for instance used WORKGROUP. Check that they all have a valid IP, I prefer to force that with static addresses.

1803 has alot of network issues, for 3 machines assign static ip's and edit the host files

^ None of this is necessary, the products do work, it's all basic stuff. You should not need to be using HOSTS
1) Make sure the network is identified properly as WORK or HOME,not public, then computers are discoverable to each other
2) Workgroup should ideally be the same but completely not necessary.
3) Don't pay the guy that set it up until it works properly


Ideally of course a small domain and central storage and backup would make life much simpler even if incurring a bit of a one off capex but may be overkill

A recent Win10 'upgrade' got rid of work groups altogether. I fell foul of it as only one PC has win10, all the rest are Win 7

there has always been issues networking PC with different versions of the windows operating system. It mostly depends on the order the PCs are turned on as that decides which PC is the browsemaster for the network and it is this that determines whether other PCs are visible within "Network"

Windows 10 is even more picky about sharing folders to unidentified users so quite often you need to create the same username and password combination on the windows 10 PC that you are using on the others

network access permission can be even harder if you aren't using passwords on the PC usernames

It really depends on what you mean by network. Are they file sharing, print sharing, or is there network attached storage, or server/client software running? It could be as simple as disabling the Windows firewall.

I would echo the comment regarding not to edit host files or apply static IP's as its much preferable to use DHCP. I honestly don't think the issue is likely to be caused by a recent update. I have several machines networking fine with various versions of Windows and Linux.

More info on your setup could help us figure it out if the technician gives up.

He got it working today. some setting he changed, said it should be automatic but it was set to manual????

Plus he had to alter a few other permissions but it works now.
