Neighbour growing ivy up my garage.

What would you guys do in this situation. Surly eveyone knows it's bad for buildings. How else does it stick itself up walls.

My detached garage backs onto property. The ivy on the inside of the loft area know.

Ask him to cease the nuisance forthwith!

I had to demolish s garage at my last place as the previous owner hadn't controlled the ivy and it had grown into the structure destroying the walls and roof.

How does the neighbour feel about it? "been meaning to trim it" or "tresured family hierloom"?
No one wants to fall out with neighbours so try to chat to them and offer to help trim it. If they aren't that fussed, smash it off at the roots but don't settle at anything less than getting it a foot away from every opening/roof edge. Be nice not to have it on the brickwork at all, but it'll really be playing havoc with the barge board and tiles. If they start getting arsey, a hint that you don't want to have to ask them to pay to get a builder in to repair the damage may help.

Ivy is really tough, I tried spraying the back wall of my workshop a few time with roundup which checked it for a while but didn't kill it. Chopping all the trunks (some over an inch around) did nothing as it was also dangling in the gutter. pulling off the bottom 4 feet and the top foot making sure the gutter was clear has finally killed it. Good luck.

go round and tell him the problem your concerned about, i take it thats your garage in the photo with this rampant stuff on?, he has a duty not to cause your property damage, besides its not HIS wall to allow this to happen on, if he turns out to be a **** and wont listen seek legal advise

Got that problem in the alleyway behind my house. It's not growing on my wall but it does block the alleyway in a single season. I treat it by sharpening one edge of an old digging spade with a flap-disc and use it as an axe to chop the ivy off at the ground. The stuff on the wall just turns brown then and the leaves drop off.

personally send him a letter as well as a chat asking him to remove it within 14-28 days, send it recorded and make it clear you will remove it if he does not within that time period. Just have to return the clippings to him..

I don't think I'd do that unless he failed to remove it after a friendly chat, going down that route straight away is very confrontational and not to good for neighbour relationships

You're within your rights to trim it back from your side as its encrouching on your property

Thanks for all the info guys. Yea I need access to his property to remove. At the back of the garage half way is outher property's garden. It backs onto two gardens. But of a pain really. I think it's been deliberately grown to hide the hide the garage from there side but at the end of the day it's my property evan if it backs onto there gardens or not.

I will try and work out what house it is from the front and have a friendly word.

^I don't think the issue is trimming it back, it's having the horrid stuff on his property in the first place.

Yes I want it all gone really. Or I'll end up going through the same process every couple of years.

My father in law is a surveyer and says it's really nasty, devalues and damages property.

The garage is your property and not a support for a neighbours plants ,if you cant access to maintain your property then I would drill a hole in the wall from the inside and drip feed weed killer on a continuous basis until it is all dead.Check your deeds and land registry for boundaries, normally a garage wall would be built inside and not form the boundary, there is a possibility that you may own a few inches of land the other side, there is a lot of land I think is called LOP -- left over from planning or boundary establishment, your property may not be drilled or used to support a fence or trellis either ,of course this all depends if your neighbour is amicable or not , good luck,

There's a house across the road from me that the end wall has pretty much been taken over by it, still, at least it's stopping the rotten window from falling out.

drill a small hole through the garage and feed it some of this, it does what it says on the tin anything with a wooded stem is history...

looking at the picture it looks like he has just let it grow every where and is not interested in his garden , he might let you go in and clear it but it must go ,I had it in france on my house back wall and it grows faster there but it was moving roof tiles and took me hours to remove , I'm still trying to kill the roots using brushwood killer comercial strength , roundup is no good, the leaves are waxy. if you put a removable vent or air brick of some sort in the right place at the bottom of the wall you could tip a whole lot of stuff on its roots
