need to buy steel and a welder for spanish Father-in-law!

Hello Folks,

Could someone can help me out with some advice please?

My Spanish Father-in-Law arrives in 10 days time having offered to make some us metal yard gates like the ones he has. He speaks no English (and I speak no Spanish) so everything has been translated via my Mrs.

The gate posts are brick pillars, 2.4 metres apart. The gates will be very simple, and sturdy, 2 metres high.

I need to buy some sheets of box profile steel sheets, steel angle and box section steel. I also need to buy an arc welder.

I've googled around, but the only box profile steel sheet I can find seems to be for roofs and looks a bit flimsy. Could anyone recommend a supplier where I could order this and the other items from?

Are you sure he wants an arc welder. For the relatively thin sections involved a MIG may be more appropriate.

if u making the frames out of angle a half reasonable aircooled arc welder will be the cheapest. as for box profile sheets there generaly fastened on with self drilling screws.:: steel from a stockholder and roof sheets either from roofing firm or a scrapyard

Gates tend to be thicker, and an arc welder cheaper if the uncle knows how to use it.

For steel try this as a starting point: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/metal-suppliers.htm There are a bunch of links at the bottom to internet suppliers who post. Forest Metals do gate material. There's one in Greater London. Delivery tends to be about £20. I use IMS in Southend.

For the welder it's worth asking what your uncle likes. Bit of a buyers guide for arc welders on here to give you an idea of the differences. Probably if it's one use go for a nasty buzz box (generally supermarkets only), but if you can treat him to nice rods.

you can hire welders from most hire shops. Migs a lot easier and quicker.

Arc is what he's used to, so I'll get him that and some decent rods. He's going to teach me to weld (with no common language - should be interesting!)

After much phoning around (unsuccessfully) asking for box-profile sheet, I came across what looks like the stuff he's used for his own gates... I think it's Grain-Walling, ie this stuff - http://www.steadmans.co.uk/product/Wallings/downloads/GrainWalling.pdf so I'll give Steadmans a call tomorrow.

The angle and other bits I'll pick up from one of the Essex suppliers from the link provided by Malcom.
