Need to buy a welder

Hi guys,
Can anybody help me?

I want to buy a mig welder to weld up my campervan. i have a 74 Baywindow and restored it about 5 years ago (in abit of a rush), so ive now got bubbles in my paint starting to come through, so i thought id do it better this time and cut it all out. I borrowed my friends dads welder the first time and this time i would like my own!

So im going to be welding body work, sills chassis parts. rust & more rust

I have about £500 for the welder but oviously if i dont need to spend it all ill can spend it on something else.

So can anyone tell me whats the best welder to buy, (to weld to rust )

Welcome to the site Andy, loads of help available from the members here, but you have to be prepared to put up with us asking questions.


A couple of questions to start with:

1. Do you have a lockable workshop or just a storage area, this can make a difference to the size of the welder (a mini-mig or a full size box on wheels) you maybe advised towards.

2. Do you intend to keep the welder after the restore or sell it.

3. If you have a garage/workshop whats your power supply like 13/30/45 amp or cable size if you happen to know. Having to install a decent power supply can increase the cost depending on distance from the main fuse box.

2. I intend to keep it and hopefuly do some more restoring. ive always wanted to make a hotrod.

3. Im assuming its just a stardard 13amp, it has its own fuse box, but its only a little one. Im sure uprating it wouldn't be to much of a prblem tho. Does the power that alot of diference? The main power in fusebox is about 20m away from the garage.
