Need some information on AL-KO Trailer parts.

Here we go again.

I have a chance of getting my hands on another trailer. This one is 6 foot by 4foot with 1.5 foot sides, Removable tail gates and a hand winch.

It is currently half submerged in a black berry hedge.

I am told by the owner it was brought in 1972, was dumped were it is now after there was an issue with wheel bearing in about 1982.

He has a genuine “Al-Ko” bearing kit, but never got round to sorting it. Plus spare wire core rope cable for the winch, the tool kit and a spare wheel.

I know it is an old trailer, the tyre is a 6.40x13 Radial trye, totally past its’ used by date.

What I can find out it has a “Al-Ko” axil and brake drums.

Any one got any information on the above mention axil and brake system.

The Al-Ko web site does not seem to carry any information on my soon to mine trailer, or brakes.

As it is Sunday, the other places are shut, so I am asking for information to see if the trailer has parts available.

Oh yes, still sunny and coffee and choc chip cookies were had as I looked at the trailer.

Yes parts are still available most agricultural/ trailer type places will be able to help you. Keep away from caravan type places as they will bend you over and empty your wallet faster than you can scream b**ger'y.

You will probably also be able to find most parts on the evil bay once you know what you want.

Most probably a torsion bar axle as they are what Al-Ko specialise in. Round axle tube carrying the torsion bars with trailing arms rotating on plain bearings which need regular greasing.

It is a leaf spring suspension trailer, with rod operated drum breaks.
I will be having a better look, but need to get a chain saw to cut down the ash tree what has grown up between the "A" bars behind the hitch.

If it's been in the undergrowth for 10+ years I would be very surprised if there isnt significant amounts of corrosion, I would give it a good going over with a hammer and screwdriver after you dig it out to see if it is salvageable befor you commit any money to it.

Just seen your reply.

I will be giving the trailer a thorough going over, that is the general plan.

The friend who is giving it to me is an old man, living on gold mine of old stuff. 2 years ago he gave me a 1941 air raid warden Raleigh bike.

He heard about my old trailer being damaged and offered me a replacement. So at present it is me looking and seeing if it is worth my time to fix it up, but only if the important bits are available, like breaks etc.

What I seen of it today the main chassis is made from 2” angle bars, with leaf springs and rod operated drum brakes linked to the towing ball.

If it was box section I would not give it time of day.

A quick poke and what I was told today I have the following issues.

New Tyres.

New bearings.

New wood.

I will junk the electrics and use my magnetic base units.


But until it is free from the undergrowth I will not be able to give it a good look.

I would check to see what size the ball hitch thing is, as I think old stuff uses a different size to newer stuff.

The old trailers used a 2 inch ball, later is 50mm, I have no idea what date they changed. I have a 2inch ball somewhere still.

EDIT just googled it & it seems as if it became standard between 1960 & 1970, but it isn't very specific.

Well The trailer is out of the under growth.

That’s some of the good news.

Parts are available, as special parts order from a local trailer place, near Salisbury. If they don’t have them in stock.

The tyres stay pumped up, but they have more cracks and splits than a 15 century painting. But we knew that any way.

One wheel does not freely rotate, but I am told that’s the side what the bearing was “Noisy” on anyway.

The 2” angle what make up the main chassis is rusted, but not as bad as it could of bean. It looks like someone in the past had looked after it. But I will know more when I strip it down.

All the wood is shot, but the lid is galv. sheet metal what is in good nick.

The hitch has cast into it 50mm.


So I know have a nice summer project, when I fully better.
