Need new petrol strimmer, what to go for

Hey all

I had a parkside petrol multi tool for a year. Was unreliable from day one and finally packed in

Want something that will do me years with good parts availability

Was thinking stihl94r or echo 2621 but noticed my local stocks oleo mac for a lot less

Would oleo mac be worth a go or should I go stihl or echo?

Are the attachments compatible across the iterations of the kombi or do the attachments have to be per year if that makes sense?

Split shaft are much easier to store and transport, if thats relevant to you.

Echo are good tools.

What went wrong on the parkside?

I have a cheapy 52cc 5 in 1 kit, so far working well but bit too heavy for the hedge trimmer attachement. I am tempted to get a Honda GX25 engine (or one of the £70 clones). I have heard they are good.

However my other option is to power hedge attachement by my cordless chainsaw , I'm looking at that today, looks quite a simple change, it will be lighter.

Stihl's are good, used many of them in various states of abuse and neglect. However they are the loudest and my ears cant stand them.

Yes stihl attachements are compatable with all years combi.

However most brands, Stihl included, have made their cordless electric split shafts incompatable as they want people to buy them again, and they are possibly lower duty/quality/lighter than the petrol versions.

When I opened it up the metal tab had sheared and part of plastic housing broke

Gave it some thought as to how I could repair but given plastic housing was damaged couldn't think of a way other than maybe to transplant anew trigger on

Shame engine still going good

Good to know about kombi being cross compatible

The Kombi attachments fit all models, all years. I got alot of mine good used locally on FB being patient

You're northern ireland too aren't you from memory about a welding chat before?

I never have much luck on market place but maybe should check more. Will give ebay a go maybe for kombi power unit

Interesting I have seen makita strimmers from time to time but they would never spring to mind

It works ok but doing more than a few yards of gardens / edging soon gets tiring and it can't cope with thick weeds.

I picked up larger commercial strimmer (48cc?) last year, night and day compared to the Parkside.
Shaft is thicker, head is much heavier duty, very easy to use for long periods, it also makes quick work clearing heavy brambles.
A shame I had to fit a new barrel & piston to get it to run, now the crank has snapped.
With hindsight a new complete engine from Ebay / Amazon would have been the quick and easy solution for me.

If you have a local supplier I would go with whatever he has. If you can throw it back on the counter every time it goes wrong you can milk the warranty for all its worth, something that’s virtually impossible to do with internet buys.

Can't remember the make but it wasn't anything I recognised - looking on Amazon there are lots of makes using a generic engine.

One thing that helped a lot on both my machines was a blade with vertical tips, it cuts & shreds so less to tidy up.
I use something like this (but mine doesn't have a Stihl sticker on it)
