Apologies for the rambling 1st post - Am a woodworker with some welding experience - buzzbox stick stuff many moons ago, but now need to re-visit..
I purchased a 2nd hand old cast iron spindle molder, seller said it weighed ~200kg, I with help removed the cast 1x.8m cast top and could not lift the base unaided, so am guessing it maybe is in total nearer 300kg.
I need to make a base for it, to not only spread the load (on my workshop suspended floor) but also to make it moveable by myself. I have in mind a base made from say 30x30 x3mm welded steel box section approx 1.5m3 area and 2 x pallet wheels at the back so that with a hook at the front I can fabricate a pole +2 similar wheels and a pin that I can lever up the front and hence move the thing around the shop. I have a much lighter planer/thicknesser ~150Kg currently on castors that would benefit from a similar set-up.
The rear wheels need to be pivoted in the vertical plane such that when stationary it can be lowered flat to spread the load over the floor. That bit isn't the issue
1- I've tried to calc whether that frame dimension is strong enough - gut feel says so, but would appreciate some advice
2- I am going to need to fabricate guarding and fences
3- I do some aluminium fabrication, max 5mm stuff, mainly heatsinks/cases for audio amplifiers - so neat/cosmetic stuff
So 2nd question is - what welder would you recommend?
I've looked at the market and realize to do ally I need AC which are pricey, does anyone have experience/views on say the R-Tech TIG 161 AC/DC 160Amp or maybe the TEC-ARC 216i AC/DC TIG Welder?
Any advice gratefully received
Ed
