Need a trailer - Piano to move

Late mother-in-laws piano it took three "strapping" blokes to move it - and that was on a trolley do don't underestimate the effort required. Mates daughter bought her own house less than a mile way and they had a professional mover transport her piano quite reasonably

My first question would be to the kids, do they want to play the piano? If yes I’d move it. If any doubt or a no, I’d cut the piano up or advertise it and the buyer can move it. Awful things to move about

Just as easy to learn piano on a decent keyboard, that can easily be stored away, and then buy a piano (you can get them free !) if children show talent. I did consider at one time getting an old piano and gutting the insides to make a computer desk before deciding a laptop would be easier

It has a big lump of iron in it, it's a nice thing. Sadly I don't play piano, and lack any aptitude to even try!

I can lift an end by myself, so confident I could load it into a trailer.

Maybe I just need to start a DIY project that needs a big van to shift gear and split the cost with Sister in law!

If it has an iron frame it would be worth quite a few bob. If a wooden frame, not much more than a give-away, I suspect.

I've demolished half a dozen or more up right piano's in my time .
All old up right piano's have a cast iron frame , there is several tons of strain across the strain when the thing is tuned. There is also about five pounds of lead balance weight pellets in the keys .

Could you also offer a local collect & delivery moving one off service for 2/3 of the hire cost then ? Do the collection & delivery and then get the piano all for the same cost but you only pay 1/3 the price ? Or go on Facebook market place etc. and ask if someone will share the cost of a half day local hire

what kind of piano?

I don't know much about pianos, OP said upright piano so I assumed it's one like this...

that's the type I moved with my nephew, I'm used to manual stuff, he's not used to manual stuff.... we moved it no problem

I disagree - kids have no idea what they want. We got a small upright piano when our kids were 5 and 3 - it cost more to move it to our home than we paid for it. Initially it just sat in the corner of the living room and they'd occassionally plonk the keys on it. That progressed to them trying to play basic nursery rhyme tunes. Once they'd showed an interest we offered them the opportunity to have some lessons, but without any need to do grades if they didn't want to. Now the eldest will be taking Music GCSE next summer and both play in various bands and ensembles. They may not become musicians but they now have that musical grounding to enrich their lives.

Look up house clearance / mistashiftrs sort of people . 10 months ago a Polish guy with his own van and tail lift did a full Luton load morning only session over 6 miles for £35 & helped load and unload it . I know Swansea is cheap but it might be worth looking in your own area and seeing if it can be fitted in with their other runs.

Agreed that a local man with a van outfit likely to be best option, especially if there is no desperate rush and it can be fitted in around other jobs. Facebook local groups probably easiest way to get recommendations.
