...for a project. It could be a "how long is a piece of string" question, but here goes.

I recently acquired, originally from a 4 wheel drive of some kind, a nudge/bull/roo/bumper bar (delete as required, depending on location ) that I intend to fit on my Toyota camper, after some modifications. I've cut off the horizontal "wing" parts that wrap around the headlights as I only want the central "A" bar for mounting some spotlights on.
Having cut the wing things off, made of 35mm s/s tube, I'm now left with six 35+mm holes in the A bar, made of 60mm s/s tube, 1.5mm wall. I assumed that the 35mm tubes were simply radiused and butt-welded to the A bar, but it turns out they fit into pre-drilled holes before welding.

Can anyone give me a rough idea of what it would cost to have the holes filled? If it's an expensive job, I'm prepared to bin it. TBH, I scrounged the bar from a scrappy so it doesn't stand me anything, other than the time it took to slit the wing things off, about 15 mins.

Not legal to fit bull bars for many years. That is why you don't see them for sale any more. There is an EU directive that outlines what is acceptable but they tend to be rubber or soft plastic to comply with the law. Vehicles already fitted with them before law changed can still keep them but insurers need to be notified and an increased premium can be expected.
Not sure about A bars but suspect a cut down bull bar won't comply with the legislation. Best to buy a purpose made A bar for your van

As far as I'm aware you can still fit bull bars, you just can't get them new anymore, as if asked (unlikely) they've been on the motor years ........

Is there any documentation to support the ban as bull bars are still available for Transits, VW and Berlingo and light commercials from vangadgets.

Searching the internet for bull bars EU legislation (Directive 2005/66/EC) will get the full details regarding the type approval that effectively ended the cretinous fashion for bolting a massively overbuilt climbing frame to the front of supermarket assault vehicles and 'undoing' all the work the manufacturers were forced to do regarding crumple zones etc. Australia has similar rules and their guidlines are (unsurprisingly) a lot more straightforward with drawings instead of reams of legalese... http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/licensing/lbu_vs_ci_112.pdf

the answer is if there is a winch in it. as if you have the bumper but no winch it is again illegal.
and yes you can buy alot of bull bars and such. but you have to have them registered on your insurance. and if you car isnt inside the guidelines for them you will most likly only find out when you have a smash and the insurance dont pay out

Insurance will cover 3rd parties, they have to. If fact it's illegal for them to refuse to honour 3rd party insurance based on a vehicle's condition, driver's physical or mental condition, numbers of passengers carried or good carried.

They might well come looking for their money off you afterwards but they WILL pay out to 3rd parties.

Thanks for all the, err, interesting replies. I'll rephrase the original question , if it will help.

I have a fabrication of questionable legality, possession of which marks me out to be the spawn of Satan, begat of Jimmy Saville and Rolf Harris, delivered at birth by Dr. Harold Shipman and raised by Fred West and which may ultimately unleash the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse resulting in the end of civilization as we know it . it's essentially a length of 60mm diameter x 1.5mm wall s/s tube that has 6 x 35mm diameter holes drilled in it. Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much it might cost to have the holes filled? I realise that this project carries enormous risks for all humanity, so if it's overly expensive, I'm inclined to put it back into the can of worms it came out of .
