Need a 32a spur in my house.

I won't be doing this myself but would like to know what is what! I may install the cable and socket but not the consumer board end.

So my youngest has been made redundant as a trainer for a large company that sell laser tattoo and hair removal machines, previously she has worked removing hair and tattoos, she has managed to buy two machines from the company and as a stop gap she wishes to install them into a spare bedroom in my house, if all goes well she will be looking for premises. She has set up a vat registered company etc. The issue is that the main machine requires a 30a supply, I estimate the cable will need to be about 50 feet long and will go up into the loft and then down into the bedroom, I am assuming the we will need an additional box of tricks next to the (full) consumer unit, what size cable, what needs to go in the box of tricks..................................... does anyone need a tattoo removed, mates rates!

I used 6mm for the 32 amp socket in my workshop, and for the hot tub
Hot tub was wired into this

Welder in the workshop just has a standard 32 amp socket

whilst i wouldnt use an upstairs room i can understand that you want to help her

please understand this anything that she uses for the business wont be charged for this includes any power that she uses for her equipment

whilst a downstairs room can be easly adjusted to factor these into it

remember pc,s and anything plugged into the power sockets for this business including lighting cannot be charged for unless its a metered supply

all of this wont be charged for unless you have a seperate meter creating a flat let distribution board is a little bit harder to create and it comes with a cost

flatlet or even garage granny flat changed into a business model

whilst renting a place would give this exact option straight away with a new power supply and wire in and framed up working unit and any removals done within an insulated area of her works

The tail would come from the metre, I’ve 2 supplies coming from the metre, one going to the house consumer unit and another going to a Wylex mini consumer init, from there in my case the output from that is the SWA going to the workshop.

How far away is that unit in the /\ photo?
It looks like the breaker on the left is marked 'spare'
Or are there any circuits on the house box that could be combined (smoke alarms and lights etc) to give you a spare way?

Also, Have you actually seen the data plate on the unit? Does it really need 32a or has someone just put a 32a plug on it? (Quite common as that is a cost effective way of complying with the interlocking socket requirements)
I've never seen a tattoo removal machine but surgical lasers don't draw anything like 32a and I'd think they would have higher power outputs.

I thought @gaz1 meant not separately metered for business use charges.

the house is metered for the property of a house and unless you fit your own meter for lets say the shed/garage ( in your case ) you cannot tell or bill for the usage of what is being used

with that being the case you have no bill or taxable bill that can be used for the business usage and you cannot use the bill form the house usage even if its combined

so if you changed the garage into a business then whatever that garage uses can then be billed for business usage as long as it has its own meter

the same thing is used with flats or flatlets and also bedsits where one source of power is used to feed all of these flats and therefore each tenant gets billed by either the owner of the property or by direct billing from the power companys

Just take a few readings now before she starts working and see what you use a week then bill her for the difference after she starts.
She'll be able to set the bills against expenses on her tax return.
As long as you don't make a benefit from it (like a profit or free tattoo removals) you won't be liable for any tax etc on the payments recived from her.

but i suspect without a power bill nothing can be claimed back even if its family owned owned shared bill going through its own power meter

unless theres a usage weekly chart a photo means nothing of one meter usage

its very hard to set a bill without usage numbers from a meter

splitting a room usage to the household usage is very hard to do and impossible form a one meter household

the op will have to decide who foots the bill him or the daughter and that also means one of them wont get tax back on said payments as they would be responsible for whatever was used on the property whilst said daughter was using her equipment

its easy enough to buy a meter for garage usage the same can be said for bedsits and flatlets even the old 50-1.00 per set meter usage still exists even the newer token meters are there.

Nothing stopping you from billing your daughter for the additional costs and she can claim them back as an expense.

Couple of issues though. If the costs are more than £1,000 annually then it needs to be declared as income on Mr Matchless tax return. He can claim his expenses back against that income but without meter readings will be hard to calculate.
Billing for additional costs or rent for business purposes (not domestic) can you leave you open to capital gains on the part of the property rented out as it not solely being used as a residence so not covered by private residence relief

The other issue would be insurance and you would need to declare it on your home insurance and unless you want a claim denied if a fire was to break out then you would need to ensure any installation work is professionally done and certified.
