According to the table on my website, #6-32 is about 3.5 mm diameter and BSW 3/16"-32 is more like 4.76 mm diameter, so they are very different.

You'd probably find a UNF #10-32 would fit in a BSF 3/16"-32 (the difference is in the thread form but in most cases it doesn't matter).

Something doesn't make sense to me here. If 6/32 isn't 3/16 then two quarters wouldn't be half of an Inch.
I work with a lot of old bike parts (pre war) so always cutting and making threads never known a fraction used in that way

It's not a fraction, it's a stupid american way of referencing threads. It should be written as #6-32. #6 being a ridiculous american way of saying the ridiculous antiquated unit 3/16"; 32 being the TPI.

#6 is the gauge number, isn't it?

Easily and snappily remembered* as the number of 0.013" increments over 0.060" for the major diameter (#1 = 0.073", #2 = 0.086", #3 = 0.099", etc)

#6 = 0.060" + 6 x 0.013" = 0.138" (3.51mm)

On the other hand,

3/16" = 0.1875" (4.76mm)

I have been caught out with that many times.
Another favourite of the Americans is the 1/4 20.

To be fair, the old English standards were equally daft. Hex head bolt that you need to undo? The only thing you can measure is the size of the hex. Okay, so that's 0.525" (13.33 mm). You'll be wanting a 1/4"W spanner then (or a 5/16"F spanner).

I'm pretty sure you could measure across the points, divide by two and get the spanner size: ISTR Whitworth head sizes being the hex you would get if you filed, or otherwise stock-removed, six flats onto a round bar of twice the nominal thread diameter. BS Fine used (uses) the next size down. It all made sense if you understood it. Like most things though, it makes no sense at all if you don't.

My 'Murican bathroom scales measure in stones and pounds which suits me just fine, but they have the facility whereby they 'remember' your weight from the last time and calculate any increase/decrease - which they then display as (e.g.) 1.4 lbs.

Go figure.
