name that tool

Hi all, thought you might like to identify some bits and pieces which were amongst a load of tools my father in law gave me today.

Number 1 - I know it's a milling tool, but I don't recognise the shank - what does it fit? Round shank with 2 flats at 90 degrees to each other

Number 2 - Drill bit with a round shank, 2 ovals cut out at 180 degrees to each other and 2 slots at 180 degrees.

Numbers 3 - 7 working left to right

3 - No idea at all. (What it's for or what it fits)

4 - Milling tool - but what does it fit?

5 - As above but a larger size

6 - Reamer - looks as though it fits a tap wrench?

7 - As 4 & 5 but enormous

First one to get all 7 wins my respect

Number 3 is a centre drill. I use them for countersinking and de-burring holes. Useful things to have about.
As for the rest... no idea

Top pic looks like a rotabroach cutter rather than a mill cutter (weldon shank)
Second pics, is a masonary bit -probably, with an SDS shank.
3, left is a centre drill, next 2 are mill cutters?....next is a hand reamer, and last looks like another mill cutter

Number 2 is an SDS (or maybe SDS+?) drill. Basically a proper hammer drill bit, that fits into a drill without a chuck

No 1...... hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i have some myself like that in a box somewhere but not totally sure myself whats it was meant to fit could be some old style of mag drill or something. End of the day it could still be used for milling if sharp and the shank size is standard. I do have some other tooling with similar configuration, they are used for cnc's and the diff flats are used for diff types of turrets and the angular rotation to keep the tool at a specific point. That that should not apply to the cutter in your pic as its a milling cutter of some description.


No 2 not sure.... someone will know. Its a sds something.......

No3 centre drill
No4 ball nosed slot drill milling cutter 1/4 or 6mm shank
No5 End milling cutter looks like a 3/8 or 10mm shank
No6 Hand reamer
no7 Slot drill milling cutter 16 mm shank (it says so on the shank)

Okay so:

number 1 - rotabroach cutter - what does that fit into?

number 2 - SDS bit, fine.

4,5 and 7 used in milling machines........... any spindle tooling that takes those sizes can be used. Spring Collets, autolock chucks, DA collet chucks. Er collet chucks.... shall i go on ..........................

Does it have a hole down through the middle, it will if it is a rotabroach cutter. Looks to be about a 14 to me...

Thanks - not used to any kind of spindle tooling. So it's all a bit bizarre to me. I'll let them gather dust though- don't believe in throwing useful stuff out even if I can't use it.

So do the threads at the top of the shank not have to be used? They can be friction fitted in other tools?

Hand reamer is fine, as is centre drill if that fits a standard chuck?

Centre drill is for putting in an accurate hole start. Normally either milling machines or lathes. Some do try to use them in pillar drills......... but really a bit of an pointless excercise. Short stocky and ridged= no wander with the tool.

example.

Putting in accurate positional holes on a milling machine.

Process.

1 Centre drill,
2 drill pilot hole.
3 open hole out if required.
4 ream, tap the hole or leave as is.


Look in my galleries there is something there that will represent the info.

Can be used in drill chuck, spring collets or multi bore type collects like the ER range. Most commonly used in a drill chuck. I will say not suitable for hand/ pistol drill use. They are meant for machine tool use.

The threads on the milling cutters do not have to be used. The threads are for an autolock style tool holder. They work by means of a collet with a taper and the coinciding thread. There is a centre located in the tool holder. When its done up correctly the tool is clamped on the diameter and the end of the tool is located in a centre. A bit confusing i know

They can be used in any other milling work holding means, Spring collets and multi bore styles, without using the thread. Its more likely the the most used method these days.

It can be a bit confusing to say the least............ don't worry if you cant follow it totally.

No1 is an annular cutter for a broach drill.
No2 is the top off a SDS masonry drill
No3 is a center-drill also known as a slocombe drill
No4 is a round-nosed slot drill
No5 is an end mill
No6 is a reamer
No7 is anothe slot drill by the looks of it

Is that all the end mills/slot drills you got or just some examples? I'm always in the market for milling cutters if you want to sell them.

Yeah that was all of them. In a box with a load of reamers.

Yes they can, for instance if you want to finish a drilled hole flat as when hiding the head of a cap head in some thick metal.
Centre drills fit standard Jacobs chucks. I use them when trying to be extra accurate when drilling as they follow a centre pop better than a conventional drill, and for centering stock in my lathe which is the more common use I would say.

As pointed out, 4,5 and 7, clarkeson autolock fittings. The threaded section screws into a insert into the collet body itself, and if they pick up during heavy use they self tighten to avoid repeatedly slipping. Theyre great for smaller non production use and you dont need a new collet chuck for each mm size as they tend to go up in standard collet sizes.

Ive got a osborne autolock for a iso50 taper somewhere and it takes clarkeson fittings. Its a defacto standard.
