Mystery tool

Hi, I found this with some old tools I acquired recently, but have no idea what it's for. There's a flat-head screw in the hex end that has a few turns of play in it, and am assuming the jaws should move somehow - but don't currently.

Googling the name gets me nowhere useful (unless looking for new trousers) - any ideas?

Ridge reamers, a blast from the past Often needed to get the piston out of a bore without smashing the the ring lands on the piston to death. Cords ridge dodger rings had a step machine in the top to stop the rerung piston hitting the ridge at tdc. Can you tell I am old

I was going to fit Cords in a car, but when I checked the bore there were 2 ridges in each pot. A previous owner had removed the top rings completely.

Cords rings are still available, Welworthy did step dodger rings & Hepolite Pep Pistons had them fitted as well if I recall correctly.

Probably from the era of the mobile engine reconditioner. After about 60,000 mi when your bores were worn you could phone up a nice bloke who would pop round, whip the head and sump off and remove the big end caps.
He'd then use the tool to remove the ridge at the top of the bore so he could extract the pistons from the top before attaching the reborer and bore Insitu. Fit new pistons and your engine is as good as new....until all that dwarf gets into the oil ways!

I had a car done this way, and scraped the big ends in with a pair of kitchen scissors lying under the car. I was assured they didn't need scraping in so I assembled the engine and it seized after about 3 minutes.

Still got mine and use it quite a lot, bought it many moons ago after checking the shoddy workmanship of more than one of our local engine reconditioners. They cant be trusted as anyone that owns a boremic will tell you

Fitted loads of Hepolite ring sets with the "ridge dodger" top ring
We did loads of warranty work on 1275 Allegros burning oil
They had no drain holes in the oil control ring grove
New rings and 4 1/8 holes sorted them out

I remember 50 years back taking pistons to a Hepolite place in middlesbrough to have them "reconditioned" I believe that they were put in some sort of cylinder and bead blasted back to original diameter, Anybody else remember this sort of thing happening.

I just "googled" and came across a post of mine from 2009 mentioning the same shot blasting of pistons, It was done by associated engineers group.

My copy of "The Modern Motor Engineer" explains the piston blasting process. I think it says that someone had tried blasting pistons to de-coke them and found they had expanded. Whoever, had the presence of mind to realise they had stumbled on a way of re-using worn pistons.

"Hepolite" was their brand name

Did the process allow for the fact that pistons aren't perfectly cylindrical?

Don't know what allowance was made at all, Just took the pistons to them and collected a couple of days later, I don't think that it was expensive, Did not measure before and after, I should imagine that they did the job right,
