I think the proper name is an "auto prodder" its used for making rag rugs.

My Gran used to make rag rugs, I reckon she had a thing with a hook on that had a little flip over thing (like a crane hook sling retainer), having said that I've no idea what it is!
It does look like a hair curler/styler like the enemy uses, but in minature....

Yeah, that little arm flips backwards when you push the hook through the hole, so that the hooked end is open, then flips closed when you pull it back through the hole, so that you don't lose the wool/rag or snag anything as you're tugging the hook back through.

My parents used to buy rug making kits "Redicut" I think they were called. Their last project was a whole load of carpet tiles, Dad translated the pattern into a list eg "Row 1 10 white, 2 red 20 white, Row 2 9 white, 3 red....." We all then spent our evenings making the damn things. Usually ending up with sore throats from the wool fibres. Still we were happy little ruggers in those days.

Remember these mats/rugs very well. Always known as Clippy mats in my neck of the woods.You couln't wear the damn things out,lasted forever.There were also proggy mats were the strip of cloth is threaded up and down thro' adjacent holes. True recycling days, empty sugar sack from the Co-op,wooden frame and a few cut up cardigans and away you go.

I seem to recall my Grandmother making something called peg rugs, not sure if it's the same thing?

sadly think you might be right - there is something called a prodder or bodger in rug making which looks like it has a similar function but it's not quite the same..

Yes, that's the make - strands of thick wool wrapped up in a polythene sleeve, pull a few out and they went everywhere
There's a rug here that I did years ago and another at my Dads, I think.
No wonder I used to suffer with bad chests (I'd put asthma if I could spell it ).
