First lathe I ever looked at buying was one of those: it had been screwed to a sheet of ply and ran from a washing machine motor at what I estimated to be 2000rpm plus! The guy was asking £200, I told him I'd think about it... 
I did think about it: I thought about a shaft spinning at 2000rpm in plain shell bearings with no lube...

there ok for small stuff, ive had 3 but the weak link in a myford is the head stock bearings or any lathe with plain bearings plus ime not a fan of flat bed lathes either so to sum it up and this is just my pennys worth try get a small machine with taper or roller bearings in the head stock and also a V bed...plenty out there just need sniffing for

the answer is in your question mate...plus have you recently tried to buy myford white metal bearings
...i was only refering to a small lathe and not other machinery with plain bearings like you've mentioned

having owned a myford lathe for the last 40 years and it has had a lot of hard use the bearings are in perfect conditionthe answer is in your question mate...plus have you recently tried to buy myford white metal bearings
they have drip feed oilers on them . so a top up once a month or so is adequate so if u need new bearings it must be due to neglect or mis use the only thing ive replaced is the headstock belt

i agree with everything you say relating to care and maintaince of the myford as you seem a seasoned owner and user but not everyone is the same...the last ML7 i sold the guy phoned me up demanding his hard earned back so i asked him whats up,his answer was "f$king thing has stopped turning"...i rest my case
he had been trying to get grease into the oil nipple's after taking the pots off because he was tired of wiping oil up all the time from its total loss system. Anyway still does'nt retract from the fact i dont like myfords

there good machines but are over rated as against other machines that are well capable. modelmakers prefer them and they hold a good price. as u say u either like them or u dont

Allegedly a well set-up spindle turning in correctly-adjusted plain shells gives a better surface finish than one spinning on rollers... but I don't know anyone anal enough to actually give a rat's
As an aside, when Nursy and I were on holiday on Sao Miguel recently, we went through a tiny village near the airport... called Anal
