Okay so I've welded in the past with an old Clarke 135te. No longer own it so got myself an R-tech 181.
When I have the 135te I was welding patches on an old classic mini so using 0.6mm wire and trying my best to not blow holes in it!
Now I'm looking to weld thicker stuff I'm not 100% sure what I'm expecting.
So I'm using easy set mode of 0.8mm wire with an SGS 15% argon bottle.
The welds on the flat plate are me playing around with settings.
As you can see they're all different as I was playing with the settings.
1- standard 3mm settings (19V)(5% argon mode)
2- Voltage adjusted to 19.4
3- 20v with it on the 20% argon mode
4- 21V with wire speed slowed down a touch to 6.8 from 7.0
5- 21v wire speed now 7.2v
What type of penetration would I expect on a flat 3mm sheet? I'm thinking 4 and 5 looks right but I'm not sure?
Then I had a play with the offcuts from cutting the parts out for my project. I ground back the joints a tiny bit but didnt do the outside corner which from watching some YouTube guides seems a fairly important step I missed.
They look okay beyond struggling to see the workpiece very well through the helmet and wandering off course! I was welding in the doorway to my garage so assume sunny weather but in the shade would be enough. I think I need some artificial light to boost it a bit! I'm using an Rtech True colour helmet with the settings at 9.
The joints were really tight so I dont know how much penetration I should be expecting? Should I have the same size of line of weld on the inside or not?

Lastly I'm aware I should be cleaning where I am to weld but I dont have any flap discs at the moment as I ordered the wrong size ones!
So what do we think?
