They look a lot better than they actually are. My first lathe was one of those....i know there are loads of mods can be done to make them better, but if you have ever used a proper lathe you will be sadly disapointed with one of these!

Couldn't survive without one.
Talking about a #maker when I save enough cash for a milling machine I will get maker to find me one as he seems to find the best bargains in my locality. Lol

When buying any machine tool, also consider the widgets that come with it, when deciding upon the price you offer.
Because with mills the total spend on widgets can be crippling, dividing heads, rotary tables, collet chucks, face cutters, vices , are bloody expensive.
Same with lathes chucks, face plates, tool posts, dro, steadies.....arent cheap either.

It may have been said but if you want to learn about the lathe ChuckE2009 is a very poor mentor, I know he's learning but the simple mistakes he's made already.
Doubleboost is one I like to watch to learn from as he always does everything properly and old school and I've been apprentice trained with 10years of experience!

Been watching lathe videos all night and now I'm itching for one. The credit card might be taking a hit very soon.. :P
I've had to stop watching him from him bodging stuff so badly, it's quite often a 'that'll do' without putting in the time or thought required or just seems to end up making things much harder for himself than they need to be!I must say that while chucke2009 is pretty much teaching himself using youtube (from what he's said) some of the stuff does make me cringe a little sometimes...
Not from a 'danger' perspective, more from a 'be a bit more gentle with that machine' standpoint - although his 'new' machine can cope with it a bit better
In terms of learning stuff though (despite not actually owning a lathe...yet
) as has already been said you can pick up a lot of useful tricks from the likes of double boost and also I've had a read of the book by Sparey on lathes which gives some useful information!
