My Mini: Flooring,Sills,Step and Patchwork

Hi all,

Been a while since my last post.

So after a few weekends, here is where I am up to with my mini checkmate 1990.

Here is a few pictures of where I was up to. . . .





So, I welded, a new step, inner sill, outer sill in the body. And basically patched where there was rust, and cut back to new.











Please let me know what you think!

I am planning to clean all this weekend and get ready for paint/underseal. .

Looks neat enough.Certainly a lot better job than some garages produce but unclear from pics whether its seam welded or series of spot/plug welds.If its seam welded you're OK but if not Mr MOT man may pull a face due to it being a sill / near a seat belt mounting point.

by the looks of it you put oversills on there the killers of minis! no point doing all that lovley wedling to then put a rust trap on. original patern sills have open vents, oversills dont, see the oversill you took off that made all that mess in the 1st pic? thats what oversills do. sorry to sound a bit arsy but would be a shame to see another premature mini death

Thanks for the info, I really didnt know anything about minis when i went to buy the panels, i just asked for replacements!!

chris do you have piccies of both types please so i can see what you mean i should be getting a 95 cooper soon and i know it needs a sill driver side

ah i see, suppose its an easy mistake if you dont know any better

this is what a normal sill looks like - http://www.minisport.com/acatalog/info_08-01-002.html with open vents
an over sill is designed to just be welded right over the top of the rotten old sill with the old sill still in place = rots in double time, and as you see here - http://www.minisport.com/acatalog/info_08-01-004.html over sills have the vents coverd up

also the original sill width is 4 1/2 inches, you can get a 6 inch sill that still has open vents and covers the mess you made of the inner sill when you removed the old outer sill then there are the over sills that are 9 inches and weld under the floor

and a bit of advise, try not to buy anything from minisport, there usualy very expensive. best place for panels is m-machine (look on google) they supply almost every panel for every mini, and buy genuine if you can afford it
anything else, minispares and dsn classics are good for minis

i just missed out on a paul smith cooper in november £500 quid needed a new front bumper i was haggling for 30 quid (i know i know i know) and he got all the money 20 mins later doh!
to be fair i didnt realise it was worth much and hadnt really researched it plus was skint lol
