My lathe I am refurbishing

I bought a Drummond model B lathe in a sorry state for £60 but I am slowly getting it all up and running do I can use it again as it should be. I have added some before and after pictures so far. The main issue I seem to have is finding parts. I wish I had of bought a myford as parts are a lot easier to find but cost more in the beginning. I can’t find a set of gears for this anywhere so I will have to improvise as the automatic cutting speed is to fast so need to design something to slow it down or use a seperate motor to control the speed so when it’s cutting it moves slower. I enjoy buying the older machines than the newer as the best part is learning how they work by stripping and rebuilding them.

I am guessing you want the gears for power feeds rather than screwcutting. If that is the case, you can certainly improvise something: a DC motor with a cheap speed controller coupled via a belt to the leadscrew would do. Plywood pulleys would get you going.

If you do want proper change gears for it, these can be 3D printed (someone on eBay is doing this specifically for Drummonds) or made from delrin (seller you_engraving on eBay).

I have a set of gears somewhere [] in the cave. I have no idea what machine they came off, but iirc they arrived soon after my first lathe [an old R & A] and didn't fit the spindle size, so who knows.......?

I have the same lathe that I'm also restoring. It's worth joining the Drummond group, drummondlathe@groups.io | Home , there is a lot of knowledge on there and I have managed to get quite a few parts such as a new tailstock and compound slide to replace the damaged ones that came with mine. Always worth asking for anything you need as many people on there seem to have plenty of spares tucked away.
One of the members is the one on ebay selling the 3D printed gears, feedback from the group has all been positive so far with the gears working ok and no breakages.
You will want to make up a countershaft for the speed control, or if you can find a cheap bench mounted one for a myford that should work. It's one of my next jobs when I get a chance.

Can't remember the spindle size on these, I'd need to check but it's blowing a blizzard atm so I'm not going out. Luckily it's thawing quite quickly although we had 1"+ this morning.

Hopefully there'll be enough meat to enlarge the bore if it's smaller than you need or make a bush to fit if necessary.

Drummond gears are 14 DP. The formula is (no. of teeth + 2)/OD in inches = DP .

Hi Neil, braved the storm in a lull today [actually the 3" of snow we had overnight is melting quickly where the sun's getting at it ] and did a bit of measuring.

Here's what I found.....




Looks like they may be unsuitable for your lathe, given the spindle size. I have no idea what machine they came off, possibly one of the Chinese bench top ones [although I thought they were mostly plastic gears]?

Anyway, that's what I've got. Bought thinking they'd fit the old R & A I had before the Myford...they didn't . If they're no use for yours I'll just hang on to them in case I go all Heath Robinson on another future project.
