My latest find at the tip - Stainless tank

For £9 I salvaged yet another set of car ramps, a scissor jack and this stainess tank. I was told it was a water storage tank from a caravan/camper van.

I dont know what I will do with it, at the very least I shall cut it up just for the material.

I dont know if the postage on the ramps will make it worth it, but if anyone is interested in £2 (what they cost me) + postage for the ramps, PM me.

Some £'s worth of stainless there alright, I wish our tip would sell stuff, everytime I look in the metal skip I nearly end up in tears at the stuff I could use but no mount of financial temptation will persuade them to sell any of it.

Re-Cycle

same problem SITA run the tips on behalf of the Council, and nothing will bend their arm to sell, give or make anything dissapear, thought I had a leg in the door once, but he said I cant, everything is on several cameras and I darn t.-- criminal, This is a council with many different skips for recycling and they wont let you recycle it????Scrap yards are better.

I work next door to the tip, so every Friday and Monday I nip in during my lunch break. They have an allocated corner with odds and sods with a sign stating 'items for sale up to £10'. I expect the money goes towards the workers xmas party and does pain me sometimes to pay for something that people throw away, but on the bright side, I cant complain when I spots an occasional bargain.

Im just waiting for somebody to throw away a blasting pot

Same with ours. The irritating thing is, they usually have a stash of stuff hidden behind one of the containers which the camera can't see. Selective rule adherence, methinks.

Over here in OZ our local scrap recycler sells stainless for $4/kg regardless if it is scrap or new, what doesn't sell gets reprocessed as they sell it off as recycled steel to refineries. So a piece like that would cost a considerable amount. You lucked in.

I guess i'm lucky in having a mate that is a stainless stock holder and i get trade rates but light stuff isn't to bad really, its when it gets heavy the price shoots up.
I try and use the scrap guy as much as possible as its so cheap and the bits are often very good sizes, Obviously mandrel bends and straight tube is new but isn't that much more than the same in steel.

I just received 4 metres of 1.250" bar and it was £110 whereas the same 4 metres of 1" bar was only £55

Like MattF, my local recycling yard seems to have an area where miscellaneous bits get parked and, surprise, it's right underneath the camera pole so it's not in view.
There's also a bloke that goes in with a small van and collects all the Dysons that get thrown away......however, you try and recycle stuff and you get the 'it's all on camera' treatment.
