My DIY Project today

As opposed to the "what did you do today" which covers a good deal of ground I thought a bit of "Destroy it Yourself" might be good,So my DIY today involved re-roofing the wooden shed.

Before I started I thought best to call our resident roofing bloke @roofman and get a bit of advice. He told me which felt I should use and where I could get it from so thanks for that. It is a torch on felt so I needed to get the gas bottle filled and as I had a Bullfinch torch already I was all set. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a roofing torch.

Fortunately I had the trailer already so I (and my pal Andy the Gardner) stripped the old felt off and loaded it into the trailer then I started. With directions over the telephone I managed to (just mind) lash a bit of felt down.



It looks much better in the pictures. :-)

I was amazed at the versatility of the stuff, just wave the torch at it and it leapt into position. Having said that,it was very tough stuff and I went through a good few Stanley blades for not that many cuts. Top caps went on lovely too, just made them from some strips and they went over the edge and actually stuck there. Not a nail anywhere.

This is always a problem. I don't know how many times it has been said on this forum, there is no such thing as a stupid question. I quickly worked out that there was someone on here (roofman) who did this for a living and it would have been arrogance in the extreme not to take his advice. But when you don't know and you walk into a store and they don't know - you are stuffed.

Also, most places are there to make a profit "for the shareholders" so it is all about money, it is why many of us on here buy branded stuff and we bemoan those brands which are brands in name only but whose products are now made down to a price. The stuff Roofman advised me to use would NOT split or tear, even when I tried to make it. And the job was done in a couple of hours, completed, no going back to fix something or suchlike. On to the next job. Which is the **** conservatory, bane of my life!

I knew by the feel of it that it was dogturd but needed it as it was the only place available at the time and the old stuff had blew off the night before.

For any decent shed il be going to the local roofing supplies

What's the good stuff called/where do you buy it then? Our shed has needed doing for years, I've just been climbing up and slapping on a bit of roof repair paint stuff every few months (It's crap), probably at the point now where the whole shed needs replacing.
