. i have half a box of vodex 6013s, anyone know what these are like? havent had the time to test them.

I think they are supposed to be good for use on dirtier sort of steel. Someone told me they were used a fair bit in shipbuilding.
They are also supposed to be a bit tricky to use.
We've got them in work but i can't remember whether i've used them or not.

A good rod to use. Favoured by a lot of the older welders.

Includes me then, Vodex, A good general purpose rutile electrode, particularly good for positional work, we used to use them a lot on narrowboat building.

The vodex of old were good i think but the later ones not so, my pref would
be the zodian universal 6013

Lol. Ahh their not so bad the old vodex, don't let them get damp tho cos the coating splits and bursts off when you go to weld.

No, i was involved in Submarine builds and we used a Naval Quality steel called NQ1 which is HY80 in the real world.I cannot remember the actual name but they were made by Murex. They were a low hydrogen rod and great to weld with.
I know it, Fortrex NQ1 was the name I think. I worked on an alternative for years.
Were you in Barrow or Motherwell Bridge.
I used to visit both.
I remember a Foreman (or something) in MB who took his dog to work. An alsation I think. I was told he used to "wash" the cover by oicking it up on the crane and dipping it in the Clyde and that he once caught the Pleasure Paddle Steamer (cant recall its name)
We had to do loads of tests including one called Explosion Bulge which involved welding a 50mm thick HY80 plate and blowing it up with 5lbs of Semtex submerged in the Firth of Forth....good boy fun........a very enjoyable time.

Really.......you must be sure your welds were good
I was out with Fred when he had to sign 5000 redundancy notices. He had a stamp made of his signature cos his hand hurt.
