MR2 roadster suspension mount

Hello I have been fabricating the rear inner and outer sill on this rusty Toyota MR2 roadster of mine.

Currently up to where a suspension mount meets the rear chassis leg.
The mount has a trailing suspension arm, a long brace to the rear Subframe and couple of small length braces that to attach to the mount.

A captive nut has sheared in the mount and me grinding away has opened up a hole there.. no shiny metal just rust.

I'm at a sticking point to whether this is fixable to refabricate this mount or is it opening up another complex tin of problems..
Mainly with ensuring the new fabricated mount is realigned /positioned properly.

If it will be a nightmare,then this Mr2 will likely be scrapped

The roadsters are plentiful...could you take a cut from a scrap car...that would give you the mount...then weld it into your car.

At the very least a cut would get you the mount itself.

I've actually got a roadster in a garage waiting for me to get round to fixing it (dead engine).

^^ another vote for chopping the whole lot out of a scrapper. cut plenty of excess out, then you can be a bit less carefull removing from your car knowing you have plenty to trim off the donor panel.

Any reason one in a breakers would be in any better condition? Same age, same sort of rust protection . . .

If it was me, I'd make up a jig that picks up on all the current mounts, and ties back to somewhere solid that you aren't going to be cutting away. When you come to put the mount back, be it a cut from a miraculous breakers survivor or one you fabricate, then you can use it make sure the relevant holes are where they ought to be.

I would weigh up what you're letting yourself in for and whether the car is worth saving - assume it's a post 2003? To do that repair properly you're probably going to have to get the engine out, a donor section is probaly least work. Alternatively even if the bracket can be saved it really needs to come off the chassis leg so the leg condition can be properly evaluated - looks OK over that section form the inside but it looks as though that's a strengthening section.

is that panel not available as a new piece....what does the owners forum say about this.....
Start looking in the US etc.....perhaps even Asia.....
Ps there are people that exports parts for cars direct from Japan.....
just an idea....

By the pitting on all the suspension arms looks like the car has been in the north or by the sea for most of its life. I'm not surprised inner sils are shot too......maybe use a donor for everything, but that's a LOT of work.....and these are quite rare now..... Or find one with a blown engine, and use yours as the donor?

Yes a donor mount crossed my mind.. but they may be rare to find one that's mostly rust free..

I will have a think regarding the jig.
And fabricating a mount (although this will be new to me though)

I know it's likely to be loads of work and have anticipated the engine removal as the rust goes along the rear chassis legs.

Its a car that spent around 10 years up on the northeast of Scotland. Found this out after searching MOT stations after obtaining the V5.
The last few mots must have been dodgy ones as it caught me out,
When I eventually had it jacked up and started pressing on some rust patches and they started to give in.

I don't owe a lot for it. So it's either save a dying breed or just let it go to the breakers.
Its a nice car apart from underneath.
The insides of any cavities higher up have loads of good metal with no rust.
It's just the bottom of them and underneath the car, that has been exposed to the elements which has fried the metal.

I don't think that level of rust is normal on a roadster...most get scrapped because the engines fail (various known issues).

I can't remember if all the shells are the same...so pre facelift have the same mount?

Thoroughly assess the whole car for rust repairs, remembering they will always be bigger than you think. Work out how much it will cost in time and materials and compare that against the cost of a sound shell with a blown engine.
I'd be very surprised if you don't scrap this car!
