Mpeg 2 to DVD - Pulling my hair out!

I know we have some PC techies on here so where better to ask:

I have on my pc a fair few films in mpeg2 format, I also have Nero Vison software (legal copy).

When I 'make a dvd' all goes well and it burns one, it works on the pc and in the DVD player for the tv but there is no sound on either.

I also want to convert the mpeg2 to mpeg 4 for my tablet, mpeg2's don't give the 'resume at finish' or slider bar when playing, hoping conversion to mpeg4 will do, I watch mpeg4's with no problems on the Hudl2

So:

1. Why don't my dvd's have sound when burnt with Nero

2. Is there a good free and safe software available for me to download and try, most only burn a third or have a copyright across the screen unless you upgrade and having paid for Nero a couple of years back don't fancy buying another that won't do the business.

3. Is there the same for the mpeg2 to mpeg4, have tried 4 of these so called free packages and all require upgrades.

4. I know a bit about pc's but am at the trailing end of technology so keep it simple please.

I use Freemake Video Converter for both conversions and DVD creation.

You can combine all sorts of video formats in one project to create a DVD for example. The DVD menus are bit noddy and there's usually a freemake logo at the end of a video, but I've had no problems using it over the last couple of years.

If you do try the software be careful not to accept any bundled third party software that it asks you to try during installation.

Make sure when your telling Nero to write the files that you are also including the sound files.

Had a simliar issue a few years back and it turns out that there is video files and sound files that both need to be copied.

If the sound is working on then pc from the dvd then its most probably the format of the files that are not being supported by the dvd player so yes you will need to convert them before burning to disc.

The burnt disc has no sound on DVD player or the PC and I have said quite a bit to Nero this morning...non of it repeatable here

Off to the playfields to tire out a pest, will give the freemake a go when back...fingers crossed.

1: MPEG2 is a video and audio combined format. The codec (compression and decompression protocols) used within it may be the problem. They're pretty basic and are standard but I wonder if Nero has broken something in the chain and that's why it's silently (excuse pun) failing.

2. Yes.

• Windows 7 Home Premium or better comes with a built-in one: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/burn-a-dvd-video-disc-with-windows-dvd-maker
• https://handbrake.fr/ is excellent but is more for transcoding (changing from format to format).
• http://www.dvdstyler.org/en/ used to be brilliant and easy to use. Not touched it in a few years so YMMV now.

3. Handbrake (see above) will do it but the question is why? The quality won't be any better and could be actually worse depending on how good the tool is. Are you after playing the digital file on other media devices (iPod etc)?

Will have a look at the handbrake one but at the moment I am hopefully sorted thanks to Colin and his link to Freemake.

Downloaded and installed it and it's burnt a perfect DVD...with sound and also converted from mpeg 2 to 4, I am well pleased.

Need to try the mpeg4 on my Hudl later to see if it works as I want, the Hudl played mpeg2 perfectly but you could not FF and if you stopped it halfway it was a back to the beginning, mpeg4 offers both FF and resume.

So I can vouch for Freemake but as Colin mentions when installing keep an eye on it or it will install toolbars etc etc.

Down in the dumps again though:

Got the film I really wanted to burn correctly, great film about the Gulags and Siberian prison camps, did a quick check and it has audio this time, loaded it onto a sd card, into the hudl tablet and all set for a lazy night in bed watching a good film into the early hours, did a quick double check that it worked on the tablet and the damn things in Russian

never used handbrake looks interesting for freeware

ive used a few things over the years prefer one button then let the program get on with it for dvds i always used dvd shrink and anydvd

i use one program only for everything that i do which is convertx to dvd they also play in playstations as well

for converting i found a good one and fast Xilisoft Video Converter Platinum also because i use an ipod and i have also done music as well for neighbours

nowadays its rip films to the divx and xvid format smaller files and gives very good output for dvd

Scanned it with defender and malwarebytes and came out clear.

Try it with Sophos and Norton. Both enterprise editions.
