Picked this up last night champion mower 45 cut non running been stood for a few years bloke said just would not start

Got it home done a big clean up I think from the thick goop in the carb think they had put engine oil in the fuel tank it was hard to clean up but with a bowl of fuel and a 2nd bowel of carb cleaner as cleaned to an inch of its life poped it all back together added new fuel and started on the 2nd pull I was very suprised and ran great in low and high speed even on low speed ticked over nice job done I thought put in garage and was going to make it a moving in present for a good mate of mine

Come out this morning thought I would give my grass a quick 1st trim of the year and it's hard to start pulled it 6 times before starting but would not keep running pulled the air filter and give it a small dose of carb clean to get it running and it started but run lumpy dies in low speed and even in high speed seams like it missing

And did clean the fuel tank as well

And check to make it's the right one for the mower.

Dirt in the carb.

It may clean it self out after a good run.
If not strip it down and clean it.

What engine is it? If it's a Briggs and Stratton a common fault is the diaphragm in the carb, about £2 each, make sure its fitted the correct way up.

Doesn't look like a Briggs but if it is the last two I had were poor starters due to tight valve clearances. Doesn't take long to sort out mind.

Running too lean is my guess.

There should be a fuel mixture screw with a spring behind it sticking out the side of the carb somewhere so I would adjust that first.

sorry for late reply doing work

striped the carb again this moring just to see if there was more oil in the fuel come down but the carb is clean
but still used more carb cleaner quick just to see but when spraying over a clean paper towel no more dirt in there the float and pins moves fine and put back together

is started and run fine last night if was still not working would still plug away at it but cant see what would be wrong over night

i got 2 spark plugs prob not the right ones but same size lenght so will not hit the head when running

put both in and makes no diffrance i have bought a spark plug but got to wait untill it come through snail mail but dont think this is the reason as was runing fine before

only one thing i have noted seams to run fineish if i have it running on choke soon as i drop to normal run it plays up

+1 on the diaphragm.
Redex and carb cleaner will attack and ruin it.
If it's floppy/soggy like this picture, replace it.

In fact just replace it anyway.

one of my favourite tricks is to de rust and re gap the ignition magneto.

The trouble is, if it runs on choke, is that the carb has been varnished, for wont of a description, by the old fuel. In my experience the only way to clean the carb is to have it sonic cleaned using the correct fluid. Any mower shop who does repairs should have the facility to do this.

Clean the main jet in the centre of the carb it's the cause 99% of the time when you have fast running problems
