Mower deck repair / first mig welding

the mig decided to work today so after a little go on some scrap i got on with the mower deck dosnt look the best but it wont fall off an wont be seen anyway

what do you think to this one the best weld of the day

Welds don't look too bad for patches on rust thin metal

Looks like you need bore gas flow. Or at least clean the metal better.

Edit: and make sure to clean the back side as all that grass/rust/mud will spew gasses as it heats up and contaminate the weld.

No mate,id just read the post about gas & gasless,id second shenion's comments,but not bad at all.

ah i see i cleaned just the one side tried to not go to mad cleaning the deck so as not to make to many more holes i supose the wind didnt help much either did it ?? i cant wait to try it again but ive run out of wire

Looks good.
So did you cut out the rust or just plate over it?

I decided to just plate over it didnt see the point in cutting it out due to the fact the whole underside is compleately covered in rust but ive now given it a coat of hammerite so hopefully it wont rust to quick !

I expect it'll last as long as it needs though plated-over rust will come back through because the moisture can fester in the sandwitch.

well ive slapped alot of paint over the hole from the other side so im hopeing that will help problem with mowers is who ever cleans off all the wet grass after ya use it

looks like a new un now

all welded up sharpened new bearings on one side total cost 6 quid plus 4.99 plus vat for the hammerite an still got loads of that left

Nice job, it looks like a lawnflight or mtd 36 0r 38 inch cut.

just to be different its a 34 an its from a lawnflite ill hopefully refit it over the weekend

Have welded up a few decks and TIG'ed some cracked spindles. Most decks had cracks from endlessly slamming into things. If it is rotted out, just to easy to get one off a dead mower (lots here on craigs list.)

Have restored/parted out about a dozen riding mowers over the last year (trying to survive in this economy.) Most 38-46" decks. Sell for about twice what they cost.

Got a 36" in, needed engine swap. Was amazed how these seem to get so much money, more than some of the bigger ones. Always wondered why?

Then I saw it in an ad "Will fit through gate in fence" :; So, that is the big demand.

Yeah, I had to install a double gate for my 42" mower.

got it back on yesterday an tried it this mornin cuts ok its still running a bit rough though an the bonnet needs work

yep i got it someone said it on another forum i put this on to lol added a grill today

was an old shopping basket didnt really need it but looks better than a big hole an its good practice
