Mower blade.

I was asked to look at a Mountfield sp53 mower with a sheared bolt. Long story short he decided to buy a smaller mower anyway and said I could keep the mountfield for spares or whatever.

I intend to sharpen the blade, fit a new belt and replace the bolt. Looking online for the belt I discovered that a new (genuine) blade was £12. Cylinder mowers aside, why would anyone bother sharpening if a replacement is that cheap?

Because a quick sharpen only takes 5mins more than replacement on one of those.
But even I bin them when they are too far gone

I don't know what grade of steel is used for mower blades but the modern ones seem to be softer than the older ones. Sharpening a lot of the newer blades seems to be a waste of time as they don't hold an edge for very long once resharpened.

yeah i know what you mean

its got to the stage to grab arc welder out weld a hard edge onto it and regrind again for a good sharp edge that lasts a while before going blunt

To be fair it wasn't in the first flushes of youth, but I didn't consider replacement until I saw the price.

If you sharpen the one that came off you got your own 'service exchange' system going on. It should cut your VOR time down.

Like most on here once I'd ordered the new one my first thought was "What can I use that old blade for?"

Mower blades certainly won't be made from Damascus steel, or any of the more esoteric steels, so don't expect to be able to make the knife blade you always wanted from the old blade. If the blade steel is too hard, hitting a large stone could have catastrophic effects if the blade were to shatter.

If I want/ need it today , I need to live near a shop. More than likely they’ll charge me postage because I live in a remote part of Scotland

Bit of grinding paste on the cylinder, tighten up the bottom blade, impact gun on the cylinder drive, run it backwards for a bit then a final run forwards, adjust the blade (shouldnt need anything). Done.

At times its infuriating, paid £12+vat postage for a pair of vice jaws in a small jiffy bag from England, took 9 days to arrive! I remeber buying a machine mart tent.portable workshop, planned to pick it up from Glasgow and carry in back of Landy, shop insisted it was too big to fit I ended up paying £120 postage for the 2 hour trip from Glasgow, when it arrived I measured it and it would have fitted, just...sorry for going off topic.

I sharpen my brothers Honda Izzy ones regularly, though he is a gardener, so they get well used.

It’s rediculous at times Tom. I went to order bird seed from a website. Wanted £20 for postage for a small bag of seed and a feeder. It would have come RM. I get that costs have to be covered but they need to be reasonable
