Depending on how high the gate lifts, offsetting the pivot may mean the gate gets pulled sideways more as the lever goes past horizontal. As long as the gate is tall enough it should still slide in the runners ok. It'll always happen of course but it'll be exaggerated by the offset.

Yes that's right. I did do a rough mock up and the arm will sit just above the top of the shoot/gate. And with the other pivot points on the gate it should lift up a reasonable way without binding on the runners.the gate will never be lifted right up to its maximum point.only enough to let the tarmac out in to the wheel barrows.

With regard to the folding handle, if you made the top piece extend past the end of the bottom piece you could then weld a flat piece on the side of it so when you fold it out it butts up against the bottom piece and so stopping it going an further.With the top piece longer the stop would pivot past the end of the bottom piece. You then also the same further down the arm so that it sits nicely in the closed position.
