Move to stainless?

Hi all,

i've been making garden brackets etc out of mild steel for some time now and mig welding them up, this has all been working well but I have a need to make some from stainless now.

Is Mig ok on stainless or would i need to go to Tig and learn that?

Materials are 3-5mm thick mainly and I have a 160A r-tech mig welder.

Any pointers???

Mig will be fine for stainless!

mig is fine, just get yourself some stainless wire and some gas suited for stainless. everyone says you need less than 3% co2 in argon but if it is just for a few small things every now and then I just carry on using my usual mig gas which is 5% co2 in argon

Ok, not to worry, just got a great deal on a 160A AC/DC Tig unit

Should be just right for my needs and I also get to learn a new process.

Chances are I'll be able to replace the Mig with it or what I do.

Mig is fine for stainless yes, if its quite thick then its ideal, but one thing to do is get your settings dialed in as best you can to get it running as smoothly as you can get it to, as spatter on stainless is terrible to get off again lol
