Mounting Lathe Turning Tool

Hi all . Im in the process of buying a hobby mini Mill , ive watched a heap of Y-Tube videos on how others with expierience go about it. A few owners have also done a bit of turning on them using lathe cutting Bits/Holders , how would it be best to mount the cutters , in a Vice or are there custom made pedestals ? , cheers.

not sure I'd bother.....I can see it all going wrong very quickly.......plenty of cheap mini lathes around......and Christmas is just around the corner.....HoHoHo.....

I know about the Lathes , for the one off small job , im not buying one .

sometimes for the time of making one its better to buy one

now it depends on what size your going to do in the lathe

oh one other thing and it bugs the hell out of me many on youtube vids actually use a lathe to make a lathe kinda unfair when people cant afford to buy one but want one

Buy one. Small ones are cheap enough. Then you will need a bigger one.

Just bought one of those small hobby Sieg Mills , but recently did a small milling job on my drill press , not fantastic , not to NASA specs , but it worked . Can't be done some purists said ! , where there's a will..... ,

have you bought a milling machine instead of a lathe or have you bought both together

a hobbymat has both together or seperate



advice dont rush take smaller cuts and it will perform well for you

Thanks for all replies , ive just bought the mini Mill , Sieg X2 I think its called , I realise its limitations , and will be taking it easy . Im in the process in deciding which accessories to buy and looking at what I may make myself . As some may know here in OZ we can pay 2 to 3 times the asking price for gear that our friends in the U.S. pay , im not broke , but I don't throw it away either and making it yourself is a load of fun . ( Sometimes ) !

Good luck milling a crank shaft, a taper, any kind of threads (bonus points if you mill an internal though!)

If it were a case of one or the other, I'd plump for a lathe every time.

You can (very slowly and lightly) mill on a lathe, but you can’t turn on a mill. That’s what I think anyway...

Much easier to mill on a lathe, than lathe on a mill....

yes you can use a milling machine as a lathe, in my thread linked to above, I needed to machine a backplate casting to use a faceplate for my lathe. the backplate casting was larger in diameter than I could turn in my lathe......the answer was to use a rotary table on my milling machine

for smaller items you could use an indexing head, but just use it to rotate the part rather than using the indexing fuction

or another version I made to take er20 collets

anything is possible but its far easier to use a lathe for turning

I bought a 20mm diameter straight shank ER20 collet chuck off ebay, and used it unmodified. the threads I used were either M5 or M6 and were just tapped

if you mean the thread on the backplate, the spindle on my lathe isnt threaded, things get bolted to it. the backplate was for another lathe and I needed to machine it to turn it into a faceplate

Yes i certainly agree . Both are very usefull . For me atm the Mill gets the nod and time will tell of course . I reckon with the rotating turn table . Quick change post etc i already have . I think ill be just about set for a while . Bigest prob atm mill be where to source the Ally/Mild steel stock that im going to need to practice on . Cheers.

Scrapyard? If it’s only for practice then may as well buy for scrap prices
