What you have to remember about all the security devices is that NONE of them are unbreakable. What they usually quote is the minimum time it will resist a professional attack. Cheap and nasty will resist for maybe 20 seconds, while the expensive ones up to 15 minutes. The whole idea behind ground anchors, chains and locks is only stop a casual thief or to slow down a professional thief and make it difficult enough that they pick an easier target. But that said if they want your bike they will get it.

i had a thatchham approved lock and chain, cant remember which, oxford something or other gold, lost the key, took the 9inch to it and 12 seconds later i had a chain and bits of a lock. 140 quids worth.
oh and i found the key the other day as well doh!

Those shear-off type cone nuts are useless, we used loads of them at the firm I worked for, putting fences up and the like. Of course we cocked up occasionally, but they don't take much to get moving with mole grips.

You could always use a normal expanding bolt, tighten it, then weld the nut to the thread, that'll challenge the Mole grips.
It is a welding forum after all!

Same here, Thatcham approved, anti-pikey, anti-theft, anti-grinder etc. - took about 15 seconds with a 1mm cutting disk.

Years back my uncle smashed his bike up, so he chained it to a lamp post till he could get a van. Came back 3 hours later - bike is gone, chain still on lamp post. They cut the frame.

A lot of thieves do that with expensive bicycles, they just snip the frame, then strip em and sell the parts.

Moral - if they want it, they will have it

Not really related but I had a customer who's bike broke down in a rural area, and left it a few days before getting in touch with me. When he phoned and described the area I said "ah I know exactly where you mean" and headed out into the dark night, leaving my dinner behind. After an hour or 2 of driving round, looking everywhere, checking other roads nearby, I called off the search and went to pick him up. He showed me the exact spot, and there was no sign of it - someone had pinched it

Luckily for him, he had tpft insurance and they paid out
